This smash hit, which captures the East German 70's style in its gritty-glitzy visuals and its catchy soundtrack, is ranked by film critics among the 100 most significant German films of all time. Sunny (Renate Krössner, Go for Zucker), an aspiring singer, longs for fulfillment and to be recognized as someone special. She gets kicked out of her band, but starts over in the "underground" scene of East Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg. Based on a true story, in this film Konrad Wolf and Wolfgang Kohlhaase addressed the longings and frustrations of East German youth
Divided heaven = Der geteilte himmel by Konrad Wolf( Visual )

31 editions published between 1964 and 2016 in German and Undetermined and held by 435 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

After a breakdown, Rita returns to her childhood village in 1961. As she recovers, she remembers the past two years: her love for the chemist Manfred, ten years her senior; how his enthusiasm about his new chemical process turned to bitter disappointment in the face of official rejection; how he escaped to West Berlin a few weeks before the Wall was built and hoped that she would follow him. This East German classic is praised by critics as one of Germany's 100 Most Important Films. It is based on Christa Wolf's internationally-renowned novel, which was criticized in the GDR for questioning the construction of the Wall. Produced during a brief cultural thaw in the early 1960s, this film was strongly influenced by the French Nouvelle Vague

Goya (Goya oder der arge Weg der Erkenntnis)( Visual )

As a painter in the court of King Carlos IV of Spain, Goya has attained wealth and reputation. He believes in king and church, but he is also a Spaniard who dearly loves his people - a contradiction that presents a deep dilemma. Based on Lion Feuchtwanger's novel, Goya is one of only ten East German films originally shot in 70mm. This release is the director's cut and shows the influence of great filmmakers from Bunuel and Saura to Eisenstein
Stars = Sterne by Konrad Wolf( Visual )

Stationed in a secluded Bulgarian village in 1943, Walter, an artist and sergeant in the Wehrmacht, lives an almost idyllic life far away from the war. Then one day a transit camp is set up for Jews arriving from Greece. Ruth, one of the Greek Jews, asks Walter to help a pregnant woman in the camp. At first he refuses, but then changes his mind and sends a doctor into the camp ... Stars, based on scriptwriter Angel Wagenstein's personal experiences and historic events during the Holocaust in the Balkans, was awarded the Special Grand Jury Prize at the 1959 Cannes Film Festival. Now available in a newly restored digital transfer from the original 35mm negative the film broke with East Bloc representational conventions during the Cold War in its depiction of both Wehrmacht soldiers and Jewish suffering and resistance
Professor Mamlock by Konrad Wolf( Visual )

16 editions published between 1961 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 185 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A Jewish chief surgeon in Berlin, Professor Mamlock believes in reason, humanism and his country. As 1933 begins, he remains blind to the increasing anti-Semitism around him. He is troubled by those with opposing political views and throws his communist-leaning son out of the house. And he cannot believe that his daughter is driven from her school because she is Jewish. As the Nazis consolidate their power and new racial laws bar Mamlock from working at his hospital, his devastation leaves him no alternative. This film is based on the 1933 play written by Friedrich Wolf-a German-Jewish physician and renowned activist playwright, as well as the father of the director-in exile in Switzerland and France. The play premiered at the Kaminski Yiddish Theater in Warsaw in 1934. In 1938, a first film adaptation was produced in the USSR by Herbert Rappaport and Adolf Minkin

Empfehlenswert (Kath. Inst.f. Med. Inf.; fb 3056). <dt.>
