Basic mechanisms of the epilepsies by Herbert H Jasper( Book )

18 editions published between 1957 and 1969 in English and Undetermined and held by 268 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A collection of highly technical scientific articles by international basic and clinical neuroscientists constitutes a review of their knowledge of the brain and nervous system, particularly the aspects related to loss of brain function control and its explosive discharges which cause epileptic seizures. Anatomy, biophysics, biochemistry, and physiology of brain and neuronal structures and mechanisms are discussed. Included are studies related to seizure mechanisms and therapeutic agents by neurochemists and neuropharmacologists, and information from physiologists on normal and seizure processes in cells and collections of neurons in the brain. Also reviewed are the principles of genetic and other causative factors of seizures. The data and concepts relative to epilepsy presented in the monograph are designed to provide further understanding of the nervous system to basic scientists, and assistance in developing more effective therapy to clinicians. Jasper's basic mechanisms of the epilepsies( Book )

15 editions published between 1998 and 2012 in English and held by 236 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"H.H. Jasper, A.A. Ward, A. Pope and H.H. Merritt, chair of the Public Health Service Advisory Committee on the Epilepsies, National Institutes of Health, published the first volume on Basic Mechanisms of the Epilepsies (BME) in 1969. Their ultimate goal was to search for a "better understanding of the epilepsies and seek more rational methods of their prevention and treatment." Since then, basic and clinical researchers in epilepsy have gathered together every decade and a half with these goals in mind -- assessing where epilepsy research has been, what it has accomplished, and where it should go. In 1999, the third volume of BME was named in honor of H.H. Jasper. In line with the enormous expansion in the understanding of basic epilepsy mechanisms over the past four decades, this fourth edition of Jasper's BME is the most ambitious yet. In 90 chapters, the book considers the role of interactions between neurons, synapses, and glia in the initiation, spread and arrest of seizures. It examines mechanisms of excitability, synchronization, seizure susceptibility, and ultimately epileptogenesis. It provides a framework for expanding the epilepsy genome and understanding the complex heredity responsible for common epilepsies as it explores disease mechanisms of ion channelopathies and developmental epilepsy genes. It considers the mechanisms of conditions of epilepsy comorbidities. And, for the first time, this 4th edition describes the current efforts to translate the discoveries in epilepsy disease mechanisms into new therapeutic strategies. This book, considered the 'bible' of basic epilepsy research, is essential for the student, the clinician scientist and all research scientists who conduct laboratory-based experimental epilepsy research using cellular, brain slice and animal models, as well as for those interested in related disciplines of neuronal oscillations, network plasticity, and signaling in brain strucutres that include the cortex, hippocampus, and thalamus. In keeping with the 1969 goals, the book is now of practical importance to the clinical neurologist and epileptologist as the progress of research in molecular genetics and modern efforts to design antiepileptic drugs, cures and repairs in the epilepsies converge and impact clinical care."--Publisher's website
Epilepsy and the functional anatomy of the frontal lobe by Epilepsy and the functional anatomy of the frontal lobe( Book )

8 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Coverage encompasses a broad multidisciplinary range of clinical and basic science issues. Topics explored include frontal lobe function in memory and planning; the role of the human prefrontal cortex in attention control; frontal degenerative dementia and neuroimaging; lateralization in the frontal lobes; repetitive motor activity in frontal lobe epilepsy; high-resolution electroencephalographic studies of cognition; magnetic resonance imaging in frontal lobe epilepsy; presurgical evaluation; intracranial electroencephalographic investigation; video-stereo-electroencephalographic investigation of the orbito-frontal cortex; and surgery of frontal lobe epilepsy. This volume is an essential resource for neurologists and neurosurgeons involved in the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy, as well as for basic neuroscientists investigating frontal lobe function

The Physiopathogenesis of the epilepsies by Henri Gastaut( Book )

3 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Material is discussed in articles by 40 contributors. Concerning physiopathogenesis of epilepsies there are introductory notes, two articles on genetics, one on neurophysiological and metabolic mechanisms, two on renal failure, a discussion of convulsive seizure and water intoxication, three articles on hypoglycemia, one on electroclinical correlations during tetanic manifestations, and one study of electroencephalographic abnormalities. In a presentation of organic origin the following are included: an introductory article, a study of cingulate gyrus epileptogenic foci, and observations on the pathogenesis of the bilateral spike and wave pattern. Concerning neurophysiological bases are articles on pathophysiology of the eeg pattern, focal subcortical lesions, the evolution of ictal discharges, photomyoclonic epilepsy, seizure from a focal discharge, intracarotid sodium amytol tests, and evoked potentials of epileptics. Also presented are discussions of new findings by the contributors and a conclusion by H. H. Jasper. (Jm)
