The report documents accomplishments made toward understanding the fluid flow and heat transfer processes in gas turbines at the University of Minnesota over the past two years. The research is divided into three subtopics: studies of film cooling, airfoil surface heat transfer and endwall flow and heat transfer. Film cooling experiments show the effects of interaction among jets on curved surfaces and calculations show that parabolic techniques give accurate effectiveness predictions in regions away from injection holes. The surface heat transfer program showed that tripping the flow or roughening the wall has a clear effect near airfoil transition and separation points and that recovery from concave curvature is surprisingly slow. Endwall studies show flow visualization on the cascade endwall and the value of a fence on the endwall for rerouting the horseshoe vortex away from the suction wall

Computation of Three-Dimensional Flows in Ducts of Varying Cross Sections ( Book )

A calculation procedure is developed for the three-dimensional flow in ducts of varying cross section. The procedure is of the fully parabolic variety; i.e., the solution for the whole duct is obtained by a marching scheme that proceeds from the upstream end to the downstream region solving the flow over one cross section at each marching step. The procedure for each cross section is based on the finite element method of Baliga and Patankar. The report describes a major improvement incorporated in the method and some examples of the use of the method. The adaptation of the method for a marching procedure for duct flows is also described. Among the examples presented as test problems are the developing flows: in a square duct, over a rod bundle, in a square diffuser, and in an elliptic duct of varying cross-sectional shape. All numerical solutions are shown to be in satisfactory agreement with exact solutions and/or other available solutions and experimental data. (Author)
Experimental and Computational Studies of Heat Transfer in Complex Internal Flows ( Book )

The details of five distinct pieces of research are set forth in this report. These research problems are interrelated in that they deal with various aspects of complex duct flows. Four of the research problems are experimental in nature. The first deals with the influence of plenum chamber geometry on the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics in tubes situated downstream of the plenum. In the second experimental problem, the mixing of fluids of different temperatures in a tee is studied. The third experiment is focused on the fluid flow (without heat transfer) in arrays of longitudinal fins, while the last of the experiments treats a nonuniformly heated noncircular duct. The objective of the analytical work was to develop a turbulence model for rectangular passages, and one of the test cases for the model was to predict the friction factors that had been measured for the longitudinal fin arrays. Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer Research Related to High Temperature Gas Turbines ( )

The objective of the research was to enhance the understanding of airfoil passage transport processes and film cooling by conducting a coordinated experimental and computational study of flow behavior and airfoil and end-wall surface heat transfer as influenced by turbulence and more coherent structures in the passage flow, streamline curvature, and other effects. Computation is used to evaluate and develop film cooling schemes, as well as to extend by analysis the experience base beyond the experimental cases investigated. The outcome of the research will be improved physical understanding and computational models of these processes, both of which are of direct utility to the engine designers in the aircraft industry. The research project finds a number of innovative features. They include: (a) detailed local heat (mass) transfer measurements on turbine blade surfaces, (b) investigation of the mass transfer and turbulent characteristics in curved channel flows, (c) determination of local film cooling effectiveness in endwall film cooling and total-coverage discrete hole wall cooling, (d) evaluation of a fence for endwall flow control, and (e) accurate numerical modeling in film cooling
