In a turbine passage there are complex (interacting) vortices, significant variation in surface curvature, flow separation, transition from laminar to turbulent flow and perhaps relaminarization, and the influence of high turbulence level in the free stream flow. Heat or mass transfer measurements, aside from providing the needed design information, can also tell us a great deal about the flow. The transport of heat or mass has been used to detect characteristics of flow which were not readily detectable by other means. Modeling for computation of hte flow and heat transfer, also, require knowledge of the flow as well as transport data to check the validity of models and their accuracy

A calculation procedure is developed for the threedimensional flow in ducts of varying cross section. The procedure is of the fully parabolic variety; i.e., the solution for the whole duct is obtained by a marching scheme that proceeds from the upstream end to the downstream region solving the flow over one cross section at each marching step. The procedure for each cross section is based on the finite element method of Baliga and Patankar. The report describes a major improvement incorporated in the method and some examples of the use of the method. The adaptation of the method for a marching procedure for duct flows is also described. Among the examples presented as test problems are the developing flows: in a square duct, over a rod bundle, in a square diffuser, and in an elliptic duct of varying crosssectional shape. All numerical solutions are shown to be in satisfactory agreement with exact solutions and/or other available solutions and experimental data. (Author)

The details of five separate but interrelated research problems are described in this report. The general theme which runs through the work is a search for the effects of flow maldistribution on heat transfer in various types of heat exchange devices. The research includes both experiment and analysis and deals with turbulent flows. The first of the experiments is concerned with the heat transfer and pressure drop response of a tube tank to maldistribution of the flow at the inlet cross section. The second experiment, local turbulent heat transfer coefficients for airflow were measured in a tube situated downstream of a cylindrical plenum chamber in which the inflow was radial and the outflow was axial. The third experiment also deals with maldistribution, in particular, that created when there is a missing tube in a staggered or inline tube bank
