Balenciaga and his legacy : haute couture from the Texas Fashion Collection by Myra Walker( Book )

7 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Short-listed for the 2008 Millia Davenport Publication Award, given by the Costume Society of America. Born in 1895 in a remote fishing village in Spain, Cristobal Balenciaga learned sewing and tailoring at his mother's knee. By 1937, the talented and persistent young man had opened his own design salon in Paris, and in the years following World War II he emerged as a designer to be reckoned with in the world of haute couture. The House of Balenciaga grew to serve an international clientele from locations in Paris, Madrid, and Barcelona, and from 1937 to its closing in 1968 created some of the most outstanding and innovative examples of French and Spanish haute couture of the era. This beautifully illustrated book presents nearly 70 Balenciaga creations for day and evening, along with 25 hats, from the extraordinary archives of the Texas Fashion Collection of the University of North Texas. The book also includes striking fashion photographs from Vogue magazine and Harper's Bazaar by Richard Avedon and Louise Dahl-Wolfe. A series of essays explores many aspects of the designer's work, among them his contributions to fashion history; connections with such other prominent designers as Hubert de Givenchy and Oscar de la Renta; important relationships with Neiman Marcus and fashion buyer Bert de Winter in Dallas; and his close friend and client Claudia Heard de Osborne."--Publisher's website

Juan van der Hamen y León : and the court of Madrid by William B Jordan( Book )

4 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 151 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This examination of the life and work of Juan van der Hamen y Leon (1596-1631) serves as a powerful lens for viewing the 1620s from a novel perspective, one that opens new vistas and invites further investigation. Van der Hamen is well known to lovers of Golden Age painting in Spain as one of the most famous and prolific still-life painters of the seventeenth century. He was much more than that. In this book William B. Jordan examines the artist's entire output of still lifes, but he also has a larger aim: to study for the first time the complete Van der Hamen, the painter esteemed by his peers above all for his versatility - for his portraits, allegories, landscapes, flower paintings and large-scale religious works executed for churches and convents in the environs of Madrid and Toledo." "The product of forty years of research, this study is underpinned by copious archival documentation and analysis of contemporary sources. Recent restoration has also transformed many paintings long familiar only in a compromised state, making a true assessment of their quality possible for the first time."--Jacket

Sorolla and America by Joaqun Sorolla( Book )

4 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 137 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) first achieved major international success with his painting Otra Margarita! (Another Marguerite!) (1892), for which he received first prize at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. Sorolla's fame in America grew; in 1909, more than 150,000 visitors attended an exhibition of Sorolla's art at The Hispanic Society of America in New York in 1909. The landmark exhibition of 1909 was followed two years later by another major show of more than 150 of his paintings held at the Art Institute of Chicago and the St. Louis Art Museum. 'Sorolla and America' explores the artist's relationship with early twentieth century America through the lens of those who commissioned him, those who collected his works, and those artists, such as John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase, with whom Sorolla closely associated
