A treatise on the calculus of finite differences by
George Boole(
Book
)
127 editions published between 1667 and 2017 in 3 languages and held by 1,225 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Selftaught mathematician and father of Boolean algebra, George Boole (18151864) published A Treatise on the Calculus of Finite Differences in 1860 as a sequel to his Treatise on Differential Equations (1859). Both books became instant classics that were used as textbooks for many years and eventually became the basis for our contemporary digital computer systems. The book discusses direct theories of finite differences and integration, linear equations, variations of a constant, and equations of partial and mixed differences. Boole also includes exercises for daring students to ponder, and also supplies answers. Long a proponent of positioning logic firmly in the camp of mathematics rather than philosophy, Boole was instrumental in developing a notational system that allowed logical statements to be symbolically represented by algebraic equations. One of history's most insightful mathematicians, Boole is compelling reading for today's student of logic and Boolean thinking

The mathematical analysis of logic; being an essay towards a calculus of deductive reasoning by
George Boole(
Book
)
82 editions published between 1847 and 2015 in English and held by 929 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Selftaught mathematician George Boole (18151864) published a pamphlet in 1847 The Mathematical Analysis of Logic that launched him into history as one of the nineteenth century's most original thinkers. In the introduction, Boole closely adheres to two themes: the fundamental unity of all science and the close relationship between logic and mathematics. In the first chapter, he examines first principles of formal logic, and then moves on to Aristotelian syllogism, hypotheticals, and the properties of elective functions. Boole uses this pamphlet to answer a wellknown logician of the day, Sir William Hamilton, who believed that only philosophers could study 'the science of real existence', while all mathematicians could do was measure things. In essence, The Mathematical Analysis of Logic humbly chides Hamilton and asks him to rethink his bias. Boole is compelling reading for anyone interested in intellectual history and the science of the mind

A treatise on differential equations by
George Boole(
Book
)
117 editions published between 1859 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 885 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The need to support his family meant that George Boole (181564) was a largely selfeducated mathematician. Widely recognised for his ability, he became the first professor of mathematics at Cork. Boole belonged to the British school of algebra, which held what now seems to modern mathematicians to be an excessive belief in the power of symbolism. However, in Boole's hands symbolic algebra became a source of novel and lasting mathematics. Also reissued in this series, his masterpiece was An Investigation of the Laws of Thought (1854), and his two later works A Treatise on Differential Equations (1859) and A Treatise on the Calculus of Finite Differences (1860) exercised an influence which can still be traced in many modern treatments of differential equations and numerical analysis. The beautiful and mysterious formulae that Boole obtained are among the direct ancestors of the theories of distributions and of operator algebras

Studies in logic and probability by
George Boole(
Book
)
38 editions published between 1945 and 2012 in English and held by 611 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
From one of the founders of symbolic logic comes this collection of writings on logical subjects and related questions of probability. George Boole invented Boolean logic, the basis of modern digital computer logic, for which he is regarded as a founder of the field of computer science. This authoritative compilation of his papers features his most mature thinking on Boolean logic and includes previously unpublished material. Appropriate for upperlevel undergraduates and graduate students, the contents range from The Mathematical Analysis of Logic to Boole's final works, including The Laws of Thought, the most systematic statement of his ideas on logic and probability. Boole had intended to create a followup volume but did not survive to fulfill his ambition; this volume features his further studies on the subject

"This groundbreaking work on logic by the brilliant nineteenthcentury English mathematician George Boole (18151864) remains influential to this day. Boole's major contribution was to demonstrate conclusively that the symbolic expressions of algebra could be adapted to convey the fundamental principles and operations of logic, which hitherto had been expressed only in words. Boole was thus the founder of today's science of symbolic logic."Jacket

George Boole : selected manuscripts on logic and its philosophy by
George Boole(
Book
)
9 editions published between 1997 and 2014 in English and German and held by 55 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
George Boole (18151864) is well known to mathematicians for his research and textbooks on the calculus, but his name has spread worldwide for his innovations in symbolic logic and the development and applications made since his day. The utility of "Boolean algebra" in computing has greatly increased curiosity in the nature and extent of his achievements. His work is most accessible in his two books on logic, "A mathematical analysis of logic" (1947) and "An investigation of the laws of thought" (1954). But at various times he wrote manuscript essays, especially after the publication of the second book; several were intended for a nontechnical work, "The Philosophy of logic", which he was not able to complete. This volume contains an edited selection which not only relates them to Boole's publications and the historical context of his time, but also describes their strange history of family, followers and scholars have treid to confect an edition. The book will appeal to logicians, mathematicians and philosophers, and those interested in the histories of the corresponding subjects; and also students of the early Victorian Britain in which they were written
