The non-conformists : Martin Parr by Martin Parr( Book )

4 editions published in 2013 in English and French and held by 183 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Non-Conformists' features Martin Parr's first major body of work from the mid-1970s, published here for the first time in book form. A wonderful and charming surprise for Parr enthusiasts and fans of traditional reportage, this body of black-and-white imagery predates the cutting colour work that earned him his fame in the 1980s. In 1975, fresh out of art school, Martin Parr found poor footing in the London photography scene, so he moved to the picturesque Yorkshire Pennine mill town of Hebden Bridge. Over a period of five years, he documented the town in photographs, showing in particular the aspects of traditional life that were beginning to decline. Susie Parr, whom he had met in Manchester, joined him in documenting a year in the life of a small Methodist chapel, together with its farming community. In words and pictures, the Parrs vividly and affectionately document cobbled streets, flat-capped mill workers, hardy gamekeepers, henpecked husbands, and jovial shop owners

The Chinese photobook : from the 1900s to the present = Zhongguo she ying shu ji by Martin Parr( Book )

5 editions published in 2015 in English and held by 151 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Chinese Photobook : From the 1900s to the Present offers an introduction to the richness and diversity of photobooks published about China, including key titles by established and emerging contemporary Chinese photographers published in recent years; books created by early colonial powers in China, including France, Germany, and Japan during the Second Sino-Japanese War; and a selection of books produced during the first years of New China and the Cultural Revolution, among many others. Over the last decade there has been a major reappraisal of the role and status of the photobook within the history of photography. These revisionist histories have added enormously to our reading and understanding of the culture of photography, particularly in places that are often marginalized, such as Latin America and South Africa. However, until now, only a few Chinese photobooks have made it onto historians' short lists. Yet China has a fascinating history of publishing photography--including publications produced by the Chinese state as well as those that offer an external perspective, by some of the world's greatest photographers. Here, over 250 volumes, drawn primarily from Martin Parr's peer-less collection of photobooks, are contextualized by and international team of scholars and historians: Gu Zheng, Raymond Lum, Ruben Lundgren, Stephanie H. Tung, and Gerry Badger. Their painstaking research into each of the featured books unveils a complex, multifaceted perspective of China, revealing much about the country and the dramatic twists and turns of its history over the last century."--Jacket
Luxury by Martin Parr( Book )

5 editions published in 2009 in 3 languages and held by 147 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With photography, I like to create fiction out of reality. I try and do this by taking society's natural prejudice and giving it a twist, says British photographer Martin Parr, who is most known for his satirical images of the ostentatiously wealthy. Luxury is Parr's epitaph to the age of conspicuous consumption, with candid images of the fabulously wealthy on the international party circuit: champagne-fuelled lunches, horse races, Moscow's Millionaire Fair, the Dubai Art Fair and the Beijing Motor Show, to name a few locales. Both biting and affectionate, this series, which comprises 35 works created between 2003 and 2009, is part of the touring exhibition Parrworld. Documenting the trends, tastes and social mores of the bourgeoisie--diamond encrusted jewelry, pure breed puppies, racecars, endless canapes and empty champagne bottles--Parr succeeds in capturing the cliche-laden tedium of excess, while making the whole scene seem a little more human. Parr's mobile perspective and viewpoint is that of a housefly; critic Neal Brown writes, characterizing the photographer's style as buzzing around people's heads, landing on the edges of their plates and food displays, and viewing everything as a fantastically enlarged, over-colored world upon which to masticate regurgitated vomit, and enjoyably shit. Exquisitely designed, this volume--with a padded, gilt-foiled mock-leather cover--is the perfect souvenir of the era before the bubble burst. Also featured is an introduction by leading fashion designer and Martin Parr fan, Paul Smith."--Publisher's statement
