Cindy Sherman by Eva Respini( Book )

12 editions published in 2012 in 4 languages and held by 965 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Cindy Sherman is one of the most influential and consistently original artists of our time. Masquerading as a myriad of characters in front of her own camera, Sherman creates invented personas and provocative tableaus that examine the construction of identity and the nature of representation. Her works speak to our increasingly image-saturated world, drawing on the unlimited supply of visual material provided by the mass media, pop culture, and art history. Whether portraying a career girl or a blond bombshell, a fashion victim or a clown, a French aristocrat or a society lady of a certain age, Sherman's work has always had the ability to reflect the ideas of the culture at large and to resonate with a wide audience. Cindy Sherman presents the most up-to-date overview of her groundbreaking career, from the mid-1970s to the present, and provides new insight into the work of this relentlessly innovative artist."--Publisher's website

"Since her earliest photographs in the 1970s, Cindy Sherman has established herself as one of the most respected contemporary artists. Sherman's work is playful and provocative, and immensely imaginative. It also addresses important issues such as the role and image of women, the question of identity, and the power of images to generate new narratives." "Organized chronologically, Cindy Sherman provides a comprehensive review of the artist's work, from the early Bus Riders, Murder Mystery, and Untitled Film Stills, to the most recent Clowns."--BOOK JACKET
Cindy Sherman : the early works 1975-1977 : catalogue raisonné by Gabriele Schor( Book )

5 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 327 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Overview: For more than 30 years now, Cindy Sherman has been enacting a gamut of female roles and identities. Contrary to popular belief, the famous Untitled Film Stills (1978-80) are not Sherman's earliest works, but rather those photographs she took as a student at State University College at Buffalo, between 1975 and 1977. During those years, Sherman cast aside the career in painting she had initially imagined for herself and began to study photography: "I was meticulously copying other art and then I realized I could just use a camera and put my time into an idea instead," she later recalled. Cindy Sherman: The Early Works, 1975-1977 gathers all of the artist's work from this decisive phase, in which Sherman was formulating her conceptions of gender and identity construction, gathering her toolkit of props (wigs, makeup, costumes) and becoming friends with artists such as Robert Longo (with whom she would establish the Hallwalls gallery in New York). With nearly 300 plates, including numerous previously unknown photographs, plus scholarly research by editor Gabriele Schor, this substantial volume adds a wealth of new information to our understanding of Sherman's oeuvre. Cindy Sherman (born 1954) is one of America's most influential living artists. Born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, she was raised on Long Island and studied at State University College, Buffalo. Upon graduation she moved to New York and soon commenced work on the groundbreaking series that would make her name, Untitled Film Stills. In 1996, The Museum of Modern Art bought a complete set of the series for one million dollars

The essential Cindy Sherman by Catherine Morris( Book )

1 edition published in 1999 in English and held by 213 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Cindy Sherman has had a profound influence on the artists of her generation. Alluring and repellent, her hilarious art treats issues of femininity, the role of women in society, sexuality, and the act of making photographs. In Sherman's portrayals of B-grade '50s and '60s Hollywood heroines, fashion models, and subjects from Old Masters paintings, she serves as subject and object of her own work. Sherman's newer work catapults artificial body parts, decapitated dolls, and grisly scenes of violence to the fore. Do you know why: We are so engaged, amused, and horrified by Cindy Sherman's images? Sherman's photographs of herself are not really self-portraits? Sherman's photographs are Rorschachs for the end of the 20th century?--Résumé de l'éditeur

"Paul H-O became a fixture of the New York art scene in the 1990s with his public access show GalleryBeat. Armed with a video camera, he attended art gallery openings, amusing some with his candid, witty assessments of their work, but also winning many fans. Among the latter was Cindy Sherman, the press-shy artist who is internationally acknowledged as one of the world's most gifted and significant visual talents. Cindy invites Paul to her studio for a series of exclusive interviews and through these videotaped encounters, he gains unprecedented insight into her artistic process and a romantic relationship blossoms. Their initial bliss ends when Paul finds himself wracked with anxiety about his own personality becoming subsumed by his role as Cindy's guest at the celebrity-studded openings and dinners she regularly attends."--Film's website
