The classification of quadrilaterals : a study of definition by
Zalman Usiskin(
Book
)
11 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 103 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This monograph reports on an analysis of a small part of the mathematics curriculum, the definitions given to quadrilaterals. This kind of research, which the authors call microcurricular analysis, is often undertaken by those who create curriculum, but it is not usually done systematically and it is rarely published. Many terms in mathematics education can be found to have different definitions in mathematics books. Among these are "natural number," "parallel lines" and "congruent triangles," "trapezoid" and "isosceles trapezoid," the formal definitions of the trigonometric functions and absolute value, and implicit definitions of the arithmetic operations addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division." "The authors have chosen in this monograph to examine a bit of mathematics for its definitions: the quadrilaterals. They do so because there is some disagreement in the definitions and, consequently, in the ways in which quadrilaterals are classified and relate to each other. The issues underlying these differences have engaged students, teachers, mathematics educators, and mathematicians. There have been several articles and a number of essays on the definitions and classification of quadrilaterals. But primarily the authors chose this specific area of definition in mathematics because it demonstrates how broad mathematical issues revolving around definitions become reflected in curricular materials. While the authors were undertaking this research, they found that the area of quadrilaterals supplied grist for broader and richer discussions than was first anticipated." "The intended audience includes curriculum developers, researchers, teachers, teacher trainers, and anyone interested in language and its use."Jacket

Mathematics curriculum in Pacific rim countriesChina, Japan, Korea, and Singapore : proceedings of a conference(
Book
)
4 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 93 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This volume contains the complete proceedings of the First International Curriculum Conference sponsored by the Center for the Study of Mathematics Curriculum (CSMC), held November 810, 2005 on the campus of the University of Chicago." "The conference focused on the creation and implementation of the mathematics curriculum framework in four countries that are often identified as places to which to turn because of their performance on international tests and/or their economic performance and potential China, Japan, Korea and Singapore. These countries have centralized education ministries that create a single mathematics curriculum framework followed by most, if not all, student in the entire country."Jacket

Enacted mathematics curriculum : a conceptual framework and research needs by
Denisse R Thompson(
Book
)
7 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume is an outgrowth of the Conference on Research on the Enacted Mathematics Curriculum, funded by the National Science Foundation and held in Tampa, Florida in November 2010. The volume has the potential to be useful to a range of researchers, from established veterans in curriculum research to new researchers in this area of mathematics education. The chapters can be used to generate conversation about researching the enacted mathematics curriculum, including similarities and differences in the variables that can and should be studied across various curricula. As such, it might be used by a curriculum project team as it outlines a research agenda for curriculum or program evaluation. It might also be used as a text in a university graduate course on curriculum research and design

Descendants of Velvel & Chaya Rachel Marinker : a living tree by
Zalman Usiskin(
Book
)
5 editions published between 1986 and 2010 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Velvel and Chaya Rachel Marinker lived in Russia during the first half of the 19th century. They had nine children several of whom came to America to raise their families. There is no indication that the family used Marinker as a surname, it may have only desiginated the residence of the family because later Velvel's children chose Garber and Echt as their family surnames. Family members came to America about 1900 and settled in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New York. Later they spread throughout the United States. Information on this Jewish family and its descendants along with the information that is available on the families who stayed in Europe (most of whom were killed by the Nazis during World War II) is included in this the 3rd edition
