On the postulate of stability of material in the mechanics of continua by Daniel C Drucker( Book )

4 editions published in 1963 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The place of the postulates of stability in the small and stability in the large in the isothermal theory of mechanics of continua is described. Fully equivalent results are demonstrated for heterogeneous states of stress in a structure or any continuum, and for homogeneous states of stress either in homogeneous materials or in composite materials which are homogeneous on the macroscale. Examples are given to show that requiring too great a degree of stability leads to interesting but unacceptably strong restrictions on physical behavior. An effort is made to clarify statements of the postulate for reasonable application to time-independent and to time-dependent materials. Also, materials which exhibit changes of elastic moduli with plastic deformation and materials undergoing large strain are treated briefly. (Author)

On time-independent plasticity and metals under combined stress at elevated temperature by Daniel C Drucker( Book )

2 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A possible description is proposed for the time- and temperature-dependent behavior of metals under combined stress. The present knowledge of essentially time-independent behavior, embodied in the mathematical theory of plastic stress-strain relations and the associated experimental data, is combined with the knowledge of behavior in simple tension at elevated temperature. This is in the spirit of Odqvist's early approach (1934) which translated Mises' description of isotropic plastic stress-strain relations to a most useful formulation for creep under constant stress. Little relevant experimental data is available as yet to permit evaluation of the proposals which are advanced. Questions are raised to which answers cannot be given now. Part of an experimental program in progress is outlined along with directions for future work. (Author)

Elastic-plastic continua containing unstable elements obeying normality and convexity relations by G Maier( Book )

2 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A one-, two-, or three-dimensional continuum is supposed to be composed of stable and unstable elements in the conventional structural sense or on the microscale. The initial and each of the subsequent yield surfaces for each element of a structure, or each point in a continuum, are taken as convex in a generalized or actual stress space. The increments or rates of generalized or actual plastic strain are taken as normal to the current yield surface. Initial and subsequent yield surfaces in load space for the entire body are seen to be convex and the vectors representing the corresponding permanent displacement increments or rates are normal to these surfaces, when the elastic response is unaltered by the deformation or remains linear. The character of the elastic and plastic response up to the point of overall instability is described. Conditions for stability and uniqueness of response are given. (Author)
