Applied general equilibrium analysis by
Herbert E Scarf(
Book
)
20 editions published between 1984 and 2008 in English and Undetermined and held by 388 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book presents a collection of articles on applied general equilibrium analysis by major contributors to this field. This rapidly expanding method of analysis involves the use of computers to study entire economies and the interrelationships among firms, households and governments in these economies. There are also articles on the particular computational techniques involved in the numerical estimation of these equilibrium models and on several particular applications. Papers deal with the United States, Mexican and Australian economies. Other chapters provide an analysis of longrun energy problems, fiscal federalism and economic planning

"Herbert Scarf is a highly esteemed distinguished American economist. He is internationally famous for his early epochmaking work on optimal inventory policies and his highly influential study with Andrew Clark on optimal policies for a multiechelon inventory problem, which initiated the important and flourishing field of supply chain management. Equally, he has gained world recognition for his classic study on the stability of the Walrasian price adjustment processes and his fundamental analysis on the relationship between the core and the set of competitive equilibria (the socalled Edgeworth conjecture). Further achievements include his remarkable sufficient condition for the existence of a core in nontransferable utility games and general exchange economies, his seminal paper with Lloyd Shapley on housing markets, and his pioneering study on increasing returns and models of production in the presence of indivisibilities. All in all, however, the name of Scarf is always remembered as a synonym for the computation of economic equilibria and fixed points. In the early 1960s he invented a pathbreaking technique for computing equilibrium prices. This work has generated a major research field in economics termed Applied General Equilibrium Analysis and a corresponding area in operations research known as Simplicial Fixed Point Methods. This book comprises all his research articles and consists of four volumes. This volume collects Herbert Scarf's papers in the area of Economics and Game Theory"Provided by publisher

Frontiers in applied general equilibrium modeling(
Book
)
6 editions published between 2005 and 2010 in English and held by 28 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This volume deals with new developments in applied general equilibrium, a field that has broadened greatly since the 1980s. The contributors discuss some traditional as well as some newer topics in the field, including nonconvexities in economywide models, tax policy, developmental modeling, and energy modeling. The book also covers a range of new approaches, conceptual issues, and computational algorithms, such as calibration, and new areas of application, such as the macroeconomics of real business cycles and finance. An introductory chapter written by the editors maps out issues and scenarios for the future evolution of applied general equilibrium."Jacket

A minmax solution of an inventory problem by
Herbert E Scarf(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1957 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The paper is concerned with the problem of purchasing a quantity of an item in anticipation of a future demand. It is assumed that only the mean and standard deviation of the demand distribution are known. A stock level is found which maximizes the minimum profit for all demand distributions with this mean and standard deviation. This stock level is then compared with the levels obtained by assuming several specific distributions. (Author)

A comparative analysis of the Bayes inventory policy by
Herbert E Scarf(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1961 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
Three kinds of provisioning policies are postulated and compared: a Bayes policy, a dynamic programming policy based on initial demand estimate only, and a dynamic programming policy with periodic recomputation using revised demand forecasts based upon an average of past demands. Cost comparisons are made by simulating (in a Monte Carlo sense) the use of the different policies for several values of estimated mean demand and shortage cost to unit cost ratios, and for various values of actual demand less than and greater than the estimated demand. Based upon the parameter values chosen, and under the limitations and assumptions of the study, the Bayes policy appears superior (less cost) when demand is underestimated, particularly for high values of the shortage cost to unit cost ratio. The dynamic programming policies are superior when demand is overestimated, with little difference between the two kinds of dynamic pro gramming policies
