Determination of the effects of sulfur dioxide on recovery systems for CO2 : final report, 1977-1980 by John T Sears( Book )

1 edition published in 1981 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The present study was initiated to investigate the problems associated with recovery of CO₂ from flue gases for enhanced oil recovery. In particular, the scope of this work may be stated: determine the type of impurities formed in ammonia, monoethanolamine (MEA), and potassium carbonate systems when extracting CO₂ from oxidizing flue gases containing nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides; determine the levels of impurity build-up in the solvents; estimate the impurity level in the recovered CO₂; evaluate the effect on corrosion in metals by these solvents in a flue gas environment; determine the carbon-dioxide absorption coefficients in solvents contaminated due to the pollutants present in the flue gas; evaluate the effect of particulate matter on absorption coefficients in the solvents; and recommend potential absorption systems for CO₂ from flue gas and estimate the cost of recovery. The results of this study indicate that in ammonia, ammonia sulfate is quickly formed to render that portion of the absorbent inactive. In MEA, amine sulfite and amine sulfate are the dominant impurities formed. In amine-activated potassium carbonate solutions, only sulfite and sulfate ions were found. No nitrogen-oxide species were found in any solution. The impurity levels obtained in the present experiments indicated no limit on contaminant build-up. The impurity level in the recovered CO₂ was estimated to be less than or equal to 100 ppM non-condensible gases, 20 to 200 ppM SO₂, and <20 ppM NO/sub x. Corrosion in the absorption systems will be similar to that observed in CO₂ absorption systems from reducing gas streams. The absorption rate of CO₂ in solutions decreases with increasing loading of CO₂ in almost a linear fashion. Several alternative absorption systems were evaluated in a preliminary cost evaluation, and a K₂CO₃ (EAE activated) solution was recommended

Public response to Coalition of Nova Scotia Forest Interests' discussion paper by Nova Scotia( Book )

2 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Coalition of Nova Scotia Forest Interests was formed in late 1993. Its members included representatives from forest industry associations, pulp and paper companies, and a forest industry workers' union. In spring 1996, the Coalition completed a discussion paper on a forest strategy for the province and requested feedback from the public. This report summarizes that feedback under the following issues: the representativeness of the Coalition; the narrowness of the paper's approach to strategy principles; forestry practices and land ownership rights; the proposed Sustainable Forestry Board; wood buyer registration; integrated resource use; and forest biodiversity

Measurement of Affective Behavior Changes in Students in an Innovative Engineering Course. Final Report by John T Sears( Book )

1 edition published in 1973 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Reported is a longitudinal study on changes in affective attitudes for the purpose of determining the effectiveness of a 1971-72 innovative guided design course. In the pretest-posttest control group design, the experimental group was composed of chemical engineering juniors, and the control groups were junior students in civil or industrial engineering. Affective variables included: (1) student's perception of himself and his surroundings, (2) debilitating and facilitating anxiety, (3) internally-oriented characteristics, (4) achievement motivation, and (5) understanding of engineering function. Osgood's semantic differential, Rotter internal-external locus of control scale, the Edwards personal preference schedule achievement scale, the achievement anxiety test, and an engineering function questionnaire were used as instruments. Practicing engineers answered the same questionnaire to ascertain differences in their operational procedures. Significant differences were noted in perception of the importance of communications as compared to mathematics and science and in such concepts as "engineer,""future goal," and "change." The remaining variables manifested changes in the preferred direction. The experimental group become more internally controlled. The guided design course was satisfactory. Recommendations were made on further research on noted trends. (Cc)
