The growth in recent years of a large swap market has had a profound impact on the development of international financial markets. The swap market has provided a bridge between markets involving different currencies and financial instruments. In doing so, it has extended for the first time the principles of the thoery of comparative advantage from the domain of commodity and services' markets to the international financial markets. Institutions can now borrow where they have a relative cost advantage irrespective of the type of currency and instrument involved, with swaps providing the tool for restructing these liabilities to meet their specific perferences and needs. In this way, swaps have signficantly inproved the efficiency of the intermediation process, channelling global savings where they can be most productively utilised regardless of the form these savings take. This increased efficiency is clearly evidenced by the significant cost savings available to swap counterparties.
