Reasons and persons by Derek Parfit( Book )

89 editions published between 1984 and 2012 in 6 languages and held by 1,363 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book challenges, with several powerful arguments, some of our deepest beliefs about rationality, morality, and personal identity. The author claims that we have a false view of our own nature; that it is often rational to act against our own best interests; that most of us have moral views that are directly self-defeating; and that, when we consider future generations the conclusions will often be disturbing. He concludes that moral non-religious moral philosophy is a young subject, with a promising but unpredictable future
On what matters by Derek Parfit( Book )

2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 628 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On What Matters is a major work in moral philosophy. It is the long-awaited follow-up to Derek Parfit's 1984 book Reasons and Persons, one of the landmarks of twentieth-century philosophy. Parfit now presents a powerful new treatment of reasons, rationality, and normativity, and a critical examination of three systematic moral theories - Kant's ethics, contractualism, and consequentialism - leading to his own ground-breaking synthetic conclusion. Along the way he discusses a wide range of moral issues, such as the significance of consent, treating people as a means rather than an end, and free will and responsibility. On What Matters is already the most-discussed work in moral philosophy: its publication is likely to establish it as a modern classic which everyone working on moral philosophy will have to read, and which many others will turn to for stimulation and illumination

An argument for robust metanormative realism by David Enoch( )

1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

My argument in support of Robust Realism is modeled after arguments from explanatory indispensability common in the philosophy of science and the philosophy of mathematics. I argue that irreducibly normative truths, though not explanatorily indispensable, are nevertheless deliberatively indispensable, and that this kind of indispensability is just as respectable as the more familiar explanatory kind. Deliberative indispensability, I argue, justifies belief in normative facts, just like the explanatory indispensability of, say, theoretical entities like electrons justifies belief in electrons
Beyond consent: Alternative sexual moralities by Anne Barnhill( )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Whereas Chapter 1 discusses an ethical view that's wholly my invention, Chapters 2, 3 and 4 are my interpretation and critique of three extremely influential views. In Chapter 2, I consider the concept of sexual objectification, and critique Catherine MacKinnon's claims about the connection between sexual objectification and sexism. I propose new concept and term: sexual subjectification. To sexually subjectify someone is to see or treat her as a primarily sexual subject. Many purported cases of sexual objectification aren't instances of sexual objectification, but rather sexual subjectification
