The theory of superconductivity in the high-Tc cuprates by P. W Anderson( Book )

13 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 340 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is P.W. Anderson's long-awaited full presentation of his theory of high-T[subscript c] superconductivity in the cuprates. The fundamental insight contained in the book is that the conditions for validity of the renormalized quasiparticle theory of metals ("Fermi Liquid Theory") are much more restrictive than had been thought, and are not satisfied in the CuO[subscript 2] planes of high-T[subscript c] materials (among, probably, many other examples). This requires a new state of matter to be invented, new transport theories, and new mechanisms for superconductivity
More and different : notes from a thoughtful curmudgeon by P. W Anderson( Book )

9 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 192 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Philip Anderson was educated at University High School in Urbana, Illinois, at Harvard (BS 1943, PhD 1949), and further educated at Bell Laboratories, where his career (1949-1984) coincided with the greatest period of that remarkable institution. Starting in 1967, he shared his time with Cambridge University (until 1975) and then with Princeton, where he continued full time as Joseph Henry Professor until 1997. As an emeritus he remains active in research, and at press time he was involved in several scientific controversies about high profile subjects, in which his point of view, though unpopular at the moment, is likely to prevail eventually. His colleagues have made him one of the two physicists most often cited in the scientific literature, for several decades. His work is characterized by mathematical simplicity combined with conceptual depth, and by profound respect for experimental findings. He has explored areas outside his main discipline, the quantum theory of condensed matter (for which he won the 1977 Nobel Prize), on several occasions: his paper on what is now called the "Anderson-Higgs mechanism" was a main source for Peter Higgs' elucidation of the boson; a crucial insight led to work on the dynamics of neutron stars (pulsars); and his concept of the spin glass led far afield, to developments in practical computer algorithms and neural nets, and eventually to his involvement in the early years of the Santa Fe Institute and his co-leadership with Kenneth Arrow of two influential workshops on economics at that institution. His writing career started with a much-quoted article in Science titled "More is Different" in 1971; he was an occasional columnist for Physics Today in the 1980s and 1990s. He was more recently a reviewer of science and science-related books for the Times (London) Higher Education Supplement as well as an occasional contributor to Science, Nature, and other journals
Einstein : a hundred years of relativity by Andrew Robinson( Book )

Mobility characteristics of U.S. medical school faculty by P. W Anderson( Book )

5 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 108 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Even though each medical school has its own unique qualities that distinguish it from another, differences can be examined in terms of faculty and school characteristics. Two general questions are pursued in the present report: (1) What are the mobility patterns of medical school faculty members as revealed through an analysis of faculty characteristics? (2) What are the mobility patterns of medical school faculty members as revealed through an analysis of institutional characteristics? To answer these questions medical school faculty are divided into four groups--new hires; transfers; stayers, and leavers--on the basis of mobility status. Medical school faculty in the four mobility status groups are then compared in terms of the following characteristics: age, sex, country of training, academic rank, nature of employment. Also included are two characteristics of the medical schools--ownership and age. (Author/KE)
A preliminary analysis of differential characteristics between high and low mobile medical school faculty by P. W Anderson( Book )

4 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 98 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Excessive faculty mobility, from the medical school standpoint, can be interpreted as an undesirable event to the institution. Are there identifiable personal and institutional characteristics that are associated with high employment mobility? A mobility index that shows the relationship between the number of medical school jobs held and the number of years of medical school employment was used to differentiate the the characteristics of faculty at opposite ends of a continuum of mobility. The three mobility categories of faculty were compared on eight variables associated with medical schools. Faculty variables included sex, type of degree, academic rank, nature of employment, support for predoctoral training, areas of responsibility, and country of graduation. Institutional variables were ownership, department type, and geographic location. Findings were: (1) faculty mobility groups did not differ significantly with respect to administrative level or predoctoral support. The highly mobile faculty did not appear to have developed the degree of attachment or commitment to the medical school attained by the highly faculty, were generally found to be in the lower usually untenured ranks, had however responsibilities at the medical school, had professional preparation outside the United States or Canada, and had received less postdoctoral training as a group. Institutional variables related to high faculty attrition by P. W Anderson( Book )

3 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 94 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The retention of qualified faculty is an important factor in maintaining the identity and professional climate of a medical school. In studying faculty mobility from the institutional point of view, data on faculty attrition is closely examined. A faculty coefficient for each medical school was determined by the ratio of the number of salaried faculty in the school that year. Twenty-seven variables were selected to predict faculty attrition. These variables fall into four broad categories: size of institution, faculty variables, financial variables, and miscellaneous variables. The most notable finding reflects the low correlation of the 27 institutional predictor variables with the criterion. It may be that other institutional variables were not included in the present study that related to faculty attrition, or that few variables capture the variance in common among medical schools regarding faculty attrition. The age of the institution and percent of foreign medical graduates on staff were effective independently in predicting high faculty attrition. (Author/KE)

PWA90 : a lifetime of emergence( Book )

3 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, Philip W. Anderson has made many fundamental contributions to physics. As codified in his oft-quoted phrase "More is Different", Anderson has been the most forceful and persuasive proponent of the radical, but now ubiquitous, viewpoint of emergent phenomena: truly fundamental concepts that can and do emerge from studies of Nature at each layer of complexity or energy scale. Anderson's ideas have also extended deeply into other areas of physics, including the Anderson-Higgs mechanism and the dynamics of pulsars. PWA90: A Lifetime of Emergence is a volume of original scientific essays and personal reminiscences of Philip W Anderson by experts in the field, that were presented as part of "PWA90: Emergent Frontiers of Condensed Matter" meeting held at Princeton in December 2013 to highlight Anderson's contributions to physics"--
