The structure of a steady-state shock temperature profile in a fully-ionized ideal gas in the presence of a magnetic field is examined. It is pointed out that many of the important qualitative features of the temperature profile can be obtained in a simple way from a nomogram whose use is described. The customary introduction of a simplifying assumption (such as the Milne-Eddington approximation) relating the radiation pressure to the radiation energy flux is postponed to indicate which predictions are clearly independent of the approximation and which features may be a consequence of it. The thermal equilibrium of the electrons with the ions in the plasma is considered, and a parameter which measures the importance of the deviation from equilibrium is given. (Author)

It has been shown that in the small wavelength limit the backscattering cross section per unit area from a rough reflecting surface is given by d sigma sub B/d omega = 1/2 P (psi) where P(psi) = the probability that the normal to the surface makes an angle psi with respect to a reference surface. This formula was previously stated without proof in a paper by Salpeter and Treiman. (Author)

The low frequency electromagnetic conductivity of high temperature low density plasmas is examined starting from a linearized kinetic equation of the Balescu type. The conductivity is related in a well-known way to the properties of collective waves, and expressions are obtained for the phase velocity and damping of these waves. The results agree with experiment to just within experimental accuracy. (Author)

The book begins with a general discussion of mass, energy and momentum transport in magnetodiscs. The physics of partially ionized plasmas of the giant planet magnetodiscs is of general interest throughout the field of space physics, heliophysics and astrophysical plasmas; therefore, understanding the basic physical processes associated with magnetodiscs has universal applications. The second chapter characterizes the solar wind interaction and auroral responses to solar wind driven dynamics. The third chapter describes the role of magnetic reconnection and the effects on plasma transport. Finally, the last chapter characterizes the spectral and spatial properties of auroral emissions, distinguishing between solar wind drivers and internal driving mechanisms. Characteristics of Ion Flow in the Quiet State of the Inner Plasma Sheet( )

We use AMPTE/IRM and ISEE 2 data to study the properties of the high beta (Beta sub iota>0.5) plasma sheet, the inner plasma sheet (IPS). Bursty bulk flows (BBFs) are excised from the two databases, and the average flow pattern in the non-BBF (quiet) IPS is constructed. At local midnight this ensemble-average flow is predominantly duskward; closer to the flanks it is mostly earthward. The flow pattern agrees qualitatively with calculations based on the Tsyganenko (1987) model (T87), where the earthward flow is due to the ensemble-average cross tail electric field and the duskward flow is the diamagnetic drift due to an inward pressure gradient. The IPS is on the average in pressure equilibrium with the lobes. Because of its large variance the average flow does not represent the instantaneous flow field. Case studies also show that the non-BBF flow is highly irregular and inherently unsteady, a reason why earthward convection can avoid a pressure balance inconsistency with the lobes.
