Blood group substances; their chemistry and immunochemistry by Elvin A Kabat( Book )

16 editions published between 1955 and 1969 in English and Undetermined and held by 343 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Blood Group Substances: Their Chemistry and Immunochemistry focuses on the characteristics, reactions, sources, and transformations of blood group substances. The book first offers information on human blood group factors and the methods and reagents used in testing for blood group antibodies and antigens. Topics include autoantibody formation and hemolytic anemia, panagglutinable erythrocytes, effects of temperature on hemagglutination, and effects of periodate on blood group substances. The text also ponders on the sources and purification of blood group substances. The publication examine

Immunochemical Criteria of Purity of Proteins and Polysaccharides( Book )

5 editions published between 1953 and 1957 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Three levels of antibody nitrogen were employed in a study of the quantitative precipitin curve. Precipitates were analyzed by the micro-Kjeldahl, Markham-Kjeldahl, and the Folin-ciocalteu typrosline color methods. Dilution with ages normal serum gave higher values than those obtained with saline or with bovine albumin. Diluting with serum from which the complement had been removed gave values close to those obtained by diluting in saline. Study of the inhibiting effects of oligosaccharides of known structure on the precipitation of antidextran by dextrans with known numbers of 1 yields 6 and 1 yields 4 glycosidic linkages gave an estimate of the size of the combining site on an antidextran molecule. The results indicated that each type of antidextran had dimensions complementary to an open chain of at least 3 units of alpha -D- glucopyranose and probably a fourth. Technics relating to equilibrium dialysis are being developed for measuring the extent of binding of the various antidextrans for the various oligosaccharides

Chemical studies on bacterial agglutination by Michael Heidelberger( Book )

1 edition published in 1936 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"1. The absolute, quantitative agglutinin method has been used for the determination of the presence or absence of small amounts of specific polysaccharide in pneumococcus variants. 2. A technique is described for the removal of group specific antibody from antipneumococcus horse serum. 3. The type specific anticarbohydrate agglutinin and precipitin are not only present in identical amounts in Type I antipneumococcus horse serum, but a reduction in one is also accompanied by a quantitatively identical reduction in the other, providing evidence for their actual identity. In purified antibody solutions somewhat more agglutinin than precipitin is found, possibly owing to alteration of a portion of the antibody in the process of purification."--Page 744

Specific fractionation of human antidextran antibodies. iii. fractionation of anti-dextran by sequential extraction with oligosaccharides of increasing chain length and attempts at subfractionation( Book )

1 edition published in 1964 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Elution of human antidextran absorbed on sephadex with oligosaccharides of increasing chain length yielded purified antibody fractions which vary in their binding affinity for oligosaccharides of the isomaltose series as measured by their capacities to inhibit complement fixation of the antibody with dextran. The data are interpreted as indicating that these antibody molecules are heterogeneous and that with one antiserum the bulk of such heterogeneity in complementarity occurs in the region from the first alpha-a-glucosyl linkage to the fourth glucose from the non-reducing end of the hapten; with another antiserum the fifth glucose was involved. Attempts at subfractionation to obtain more homogeneous fractions were relatively unsuccessful. (Author)
