Alan O'Connor was a Ph.D. student in Sociology at York University who had an interest in folklore and the study of social history. He undertook a research project on the occupational culture of printers in the Toronto area. His project involved interviewing approximately twenty members of the Toronto Typographical Union. This union was the first trade union in Canada, formed in 1832 by printers in York (later Toronto). The collection consists of taped interviews, some with transcripts of interviews done by Alan O'Connor, notes, correspondence, and draft copy of his report "The Real Live Type", 1985
