Singular perturbations and time-scale techniques were introduced to control engineering in the late 1960s and have since become common tools for the modeling, analysis, and design of control systems. In this SIAM Classics edition of the 1986 book, the original text is reprinted in its entirety (along with a new preface), providing once again the theoretical foundation for representative control applications. This book continues to be essential in many ways. It lays down the foundation of singular perturbation theory for linear and nonlinear systems, it presents the methodology in a pedagogical way that is not available anywhere else, and it illustrates the theory with many solved examples, including various physical examples and applications. So while new developments may go beyond the topics covered in this book, they are still based on the methodology described here, which continues to be their common starting point

This book presents advances in the theory and design of robust nonlinear control systems. In the first part of the book, the authors provide a unified framework for state-space and Lyapunov techniques by combining concepts from set-valued analysis, Lyapunov stability theory, and game theory. Within this unified framework, the authors then develop a variety of control design methods suitable for systems described by low-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Emphasis is placed on global controller designs, that is, designs for the entire region of model validity. Because linear theory deals well with local system behavior (except for critical cases in which Jacobian linearization fails), the authors focus on achieving robustness and performance for large deviations from a given operation condition. The purpose of the book is to summarize Lyapunov design techniques for nonlinear systems and to raise important issues concerning large-signal robustness and performance. The authors have been the first to address some of these issues, and they report their findings in this text. For example, they identify two potential sources of excessive control effort in Lyapunov design techniques and show how such effort can be greatly reduced. The researcher who wishes to enter the field of robust nonlinear control could use this book as a source of new research topics. For those already active in the field, the book may serve as a reference to a recent body of significant work. Finally, the design engineer faced with a nonlinear control problem will benefit from the techniques presented here. "The text is practically self-contained. During this grant period, we have enhanced robustness of our designs and thus increased their ability to accommodate disturbances and unmodeled dynamics. We have also broadened the class of systems to which these methods are applicable. In a different direction, we have developed structure specific methods to analyze boundedness properties of systems with "stiffening" nonlinearities, as in micro-electromechanical probes. A major advance has been made on difficult output feedback problem with a novel nonlinear observer design, achieving robustness to modeling errors. Explicit necessary and sufficient conditions have been derived for coordinated passivation designs. A new maneuvering design has been developed. Further progress was made in MIMO adaptive control. We now briefly summarize our main results

This volume is an outgrowth of the workshop "Applications of Advanced Control Theory to Robotics and Automation, ' organized in honor of the 70th birthdays of Petar V. Kokotovic and Salvatore (Turi) Nicosia. Both Petar and Turi have carried out distinguished work in the control community and have long been recognized as mentors, experts, and pioneers in the field of automatic control, covering many topics in control theory and several different applications. The variety of their research is reflected in this book, which includes contributions from leading experts in the field ranging from mathematics to laboratory experiments. The purpose of this volume is twofold. First, it reports on recent developments of singular perturbation and two-time-scale methods for modeling, analysis and design of control systems. The results obtained in the last five years are summarized in thirty papers which appeared in the period of 1976-1980. Second, it responds to the need for a comprehensive and systematic treatment of this rapidly developing field of research. For this reason, seven earlier papers are included and the whole collection is organized in a logical rather than chronological order. The first three sections deal with modeling and analysis, while the subsequent four sections are devoted to the design and optimization of linear, nonlinear and stochastic control systems.
