John Deere (1804-1886) was the son of William Ryland Deere and Sarah Yates (d.1826) of Otter Creek near Rutland and Middlebury, Vermont. He was apprenticed a blacksmith and later operated his own shop. He married Demarius Lamb, from the town of Granville. Later, he settled his family at Grand Detour, Illinois. He built his forge and shop at this place and eventually he developed the first steel plow. In 1847 he relocated at Moline, Illinois and built the John Deere Plow Works. His son Charles Deere was his only child
