The meaning of metafiction : a critical study of selected novels by Sterne, Nabokov, Barth, and Beckett by Inger Christensen( Book )

20 editions published between 1981 and 2008 in English and held by 596 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 20th century literature, a kind of fiction has come much to the fore where the narrator discusses his own craft and frequently addresses the reader. However, Laurence Sterneʼs Tristram Shandy may serve as a striking example of the fact that metafiction is no modern phenomenon. Metafiction has been criticized for solipsism and regarded as a final proof of ʼthe novel no longer novelʼ. Discussing works of three contemporary novelists, Nobokov, Barth and Beckett, and Sterneʼs eighteenth century novel, the author argues that with their tricks, parodies and humour (humor) the metafictionists are concerned with a central human problem: communication. Should literature entertain, come up with ideas about the meaning of existence or give the reader a purely aesthetic experience? The four novelists examined in this study give different and rather exciting answers to these questions and to the problem of bringing their intentions across to the reader. Book cover
Alphabet by Inger Christensen( Book )

21 editions published between 1984 and 2015 in 8 languages and held by 220 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In Alphabet, Christensen creates a framework of psalm-like forms that unfold like expanding universes, crystallising into words both the beauty and the potential for destruction that permeate our world and our times."--Jacket

It by Inger Christensen( Book )

29 editions published between 1969 and 2015 in 4 languages and held by 206 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"It is both a collection of poems and a single poetic epic, forming a philosophical and political statement on the nature of language, perception, and reality. The subject matter, though, is down-to-earth: amoebas, stones, and factories; fear, sea urchins, and mental institutions; sand, sexuality, and song. The words and images of it recur in ways reminiscent of Christensen's other works, but here is a younger poetry, wilder, and crackling with energy. The complex use of mathematical structure in it is faithfully captured in Susanna Nied's prize-winning English translation."--Jacket
Azorno by Inger Christensen( Book )

29 editions published between 1967 and 2015 in 7 languages and held by 201 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A kind of logic puzzle or house of mirrors, Azorno concerns five women, and then two men: Sampel, a writer, and Azorno, the main character of his novel. All the women are pregnant by Sampel, but which of them is really the narrator of this novel we're reading? Has someone been killed? Is someone insane? Is the whole story part of Sampel's book - or of Inger Christensen's?" "Reminiscent of the brilliant style and haunting mystery of Samuel Beckett's works, Azorno illuminates the prevailing theme of Inger Christensen's great body of poetry and fiction: the interplay of perception, language, and reality. As Christensen herself wrote: "I have attempted to tell about a world that does not exist in order to make it exist." Ending with the struggle between two merged characters, Azorno simultaneously satisfies and unsettles, leaving us with a view of reality unlike any other."--Jacket
Butterfly valley : a requiem by Inger Christensen( Book )

26 editions published between 1991 and 2016 in 4 languages and held by 111 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Butterfly Valley" is a sonnet cycle which describes the glowing color and beauty of butterflies, and also their fragility and mortality. Memory is uncovered in the poem like the fluttering of their wings. In "Watersteps," the fountains and piazzas of Rome coalesce, brought alive in the imagination by the poem's shifting rhythms, lines, and overall structure. In "Poem on Death" the poet seeking immortality faces the whiteness of the page as the blankness of death: "it feels so odd/ immodest to think/ about death when no one/ you know has died/ it means that each time/ you look at yourself in the mirror/ you look death in the eye/ without crying/ like a clear and fully/ comprehensible answer/ but to questions/ you dare not ask." "Meeting," written in extended sections, describes a "coming together," yet examines our failure to connect and the ability of language to overcome this

Martin Kasper : Echokammer = Echo chamber by Martin Kasper( Book )

5 editions published in 2014 in German and held by 56 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Martin Kasper (*1962 in Schramberg) transforms the architectural spaces of his tempera paintings into soulfully sensitive arenas: he creates places of emptiness, spaces free of thought, moments of relaxed calm, and atmospheres with unconventional auras. New, full-length portraits in which those depicted seem to float in front of the space are impressive extensions of the architectural pictures. The historical sculpture studios at the Künstlerkolonie Museum on the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt inspired Kasper to create a painting/installation that unites images of people and the architecture in a mutual echo, while at the same time dovetailing the real with the imaginary art space. This volume photographically documents the exhibition in situ and thus offers vivid insight into the artist's body of work, whose mysterious interior worlds are further echoed in literary texts by writers such as Inger Christensen and W. G. Sebald
