French opera owes much of its obsession with exoticism to the pivotal figure of Felicien David, a pioneer of musical Orientalism. His opera, Lalla Roukh, first performed to huge acclaim in 1862, was the catalyst for the explosion in operas set in the Exotic East. The fairy-tale plot revolves around an Indian princess who travels to Bukhara to meet the man to whom she is to be given in marriage. Along the way she falls in love with the minstrel Noureddin, who is the King of Bukhara in disguise

The music of French composer Félicien David isn't much heard these days, but in its own time "Le Désert," an "ode-symphonie" (a kind of poetic choral song cycle), was popular enough to be heard as far afield as New York. Berlioz, whose orchestral songs are the nearest cousins to the piece, championed it. The men of the French choir Accentus under conductor Laurence Equilbey, with the Chamber Orchestra of Paris, here make a strong case for the work's revival. "Le Désert" (The Desert) was composed by David to texts by Auguste Colin. Both composer and librettist were members of the idealistic Saint-Simonian movement and had traveled to Egypt and the Middle East. The nine movements of the work are lyrical descriptions of desert scenes -- a caravan, dances, dawn, a muezzin's call -- most of them introduced by a short recitation. For no very good reason, there are two versions of the work here, one with the recitation and one without; the recitations set the mood for each scene and would seem essential to it. The performances, however, are marvelous. Accentus' rich, almost shimmering tone is somehow uncannily appropriate to this material, and the quiet tone set by Equilbey is sustained beautifully. David was not an ethnomusicologist, and his evocations of the muezzin and of Arab music are mere hints of the real thing. But they add flavor to what is really an inward dream of the desert, a Romantic vision realized in tones. Accentus' recordings have generally been both original and well-executed, but they've outdone themselves here
