Pearlers of the Coral Sea( Visual )

1 edition published in 1961 in English and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This short film looks at pearl diving around Thursday Island in the Torres Strait - where the waters are warm and the beds relatively shallow although overfished - and off the coast of Broome, Western Australia - with its richer beds and colder waters. We see the fleets at sea, the search for shell sites and the cleaning and sorting of shell as well as the careful preparations for dives and the dives themselves - including a deep water dive to 270 feet (82 metres). The program also provides a glimpse of life on Thursday Island at the time, which was heavily reliant on the pearling industry
The Pearlers( Visual )

1 edition published in 1949 in English and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Beautifully filmed in black and white, this classic short film looks at pearling in the late 1940s. It goes on board the boats that work off the coast of Broome, Western Australia, from March to December each year. Crewed mainly by Aboriginal, Malay and Chinese men, they work six days a week from sun up to sun downâ€"replenished occasionally by supply boats that also take away their hauls of pearl shell. The film captures the atmosphere, the detail and the danger involved in the search for shell as the divers in huge metal helmets and layers of clothing under their suits dive two at a time, each with one person tending their airhose and another their lifeline
Children from Overseas( Visual )

1 edition published in 2008 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A WWII film about children evaculated from Britain and sent to Canada for their safety. The film begins in England with children seeking shelter as anti-aircraft guns roar outside. On their arrival in Canada, they are thrilled by the brightly lit cities, powerful Canadian trains, hot dogs and ice cream. They find, too, that instead of becoming Mounties or cowboys, they have to go to school. The closing sequence shows them learning to ski and skate and preparing for Christmas in their new homes
The Mount Hagen Show( Visual )

1 edition published in 1965 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Papua New Guinea in 1963, various regional groups come together to celebrate their cultural heritage at one of the first Mount Hagen Shows, opened by Australia's Governor General Lord De L'Isle. Shot in 16mm this film records the splendid pageantry as thousands of men and women wearing full traditional costume and adorned with 'bilas bilong singsing' intermingle at the showground. Under elaborate headdresses and body paint, the men sing and dance to the mesmeric rhythm of their drums. Elsewhere, brass and pipe bands march and play rousing military airs and crowds wander round the sideshows. As well as the traditional dancing, they enjoy watching equestrian events, spear throwing competitions, cycle races and riding on the ubiquitous dodgem cars. Director: Boris Cook DOP/Cinematographer: Boris Cook Featured People: Lord De L'Isle, Catherine Sidney
