Causality : models, reasoning, and inference by Judea Pearl( Book )

76 editions published between 2000 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,263 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Causality offers the first comprehensive coverage of causal analysis in many sciences, including recent advances using graphical methods. Pearl presents a unified account of the probabilistic, manipulative, counterfactual and structural approaches to causation, and devises simple mathematical tools for analyzing the relationships between causal connections, statistical associations, actions and observations. The book will open the way for including causal analysis in the standard curriculum of statistics, artificial intelligence,

I am Jewish : personal reflections inspired by the last words of Daniel Pearl by Judea Pearl( Book )

5 editions published between 2004 and 2007 in English and held by 508 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This collection presents answers from Jewish people around the world - artists, entertainers, government leaders, authors, media personalities, scientists, community organizers, scholars, rabbis, and others - covering the religious, professional, and political spectrum. They explore identity; heritage; covenant, choseness, and faith; humanity and ethnicity; and tikkun olam (repairing the world) and justice." "In this critical time in our history I Am Jewish will motivate people throughout the Jewish community to think about their lives as Jews, and have a profound effect on the way younger Jews shape their identity in years to come. It will help people of all faiths and backgrounds to better understand Jewish people and Judaism."--Jacket

Causal inference in statistics : a primer by Judea Pearl( Book )

13 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 86 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Causality is central to the understanding and use of data. Without an understanding of cause effect relationships, we cannot use data to answer questions as basic as, "Does this treatment harm or help patients'" But though hundreds of introductory texts are available on statistical methods of data analysis, until now, no beginner-level book has been written about the exploding arsenal of methods that can tease causal information from data. Causal Inference in Statistics fills that gap. Using simple examples and plain language, the book lays out how to define causal parameters; the assumptions necessary to estimate causal parameters in a variety of situations; how to express those assumptions mathematically; whether those assumptions have testable implications; how to predict the effects of interventions; and how to reason counterfactually. These are the foundational tools that any student of statistics needs to acquire in order to use statistical methods to answer causal questions of interest. This book is accessible to anyone with an interest in interpreting data, from undergraduates, professors, researchers, or to the interested layperson. Examples are drawn from a wide variety of fields, including medicine, public policy, and law; a brief introduction to probability and statistics is provided for the uninitiated; and each chapter comes with study questions to reinforce the readers understanding."--Book cover

Deciding consistency of databases containing defeasible and strict information by Moisés Goldszmidt( Book )

3 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "We propose a formalization of the notion of consistency for a set X of defeasible and strict information, based on a probabilistic interpretation for the sentences in X. This formalization establishes a clear distinction between knowledge bases depicting exceptions and those containing outright contradictions. A simple and yet powerful theorem is proven giving necessary and sufficient conditions for consistency. This same theorem provides a decision procedure for testing the consistency of X and identifying the inconsistent subset of sentences (in the case that X is inconsistent). Finally, it is shown that if the sentences in X are Horn clauses, consistency can be tested in polynomial time."

D-separation : from theorems to algorithms by D Geiger( Book )

4 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Abstract: "An algorithm that identifies all independencies implied by the topology of a Bayesian network is developed. Its correctness and maximality stems from the soundness and completeness of d-separation with respect to probability theory."
