Architecture and structuralism : the ordering of space by Herman Hertzberger( Book )

7 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and Dutch and held by 135 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Architect and architectural author Herman Hertzberger (1932) is internationally recognized for both his built work and his written work. Buildings such as Centraal Beheer in Apeldoorn (1972) and many of Apeldoorn's schools, but also his publications, such as Lessons for Students in Architecture (which has been translated into many languages) have inspired generations of architects and students. In this book, Hertzberger lays down the foundations of his architectural vision. 'This book is an attempt to formulate what structuralism means in architecture, and why that matters. There are many misunderstandings about the concept of structuralism in general, and especially where architecture is concerned. There is also a renewed interest in structuralism. What I see as the real structuralism in architecture is a way of thinking that has far-reaching opportunities for the reuse of buildings, which can give a new impulse to the discussion about sustainability. In addition, the possibility of users having a greater influence has revealed the blueprint for a more democratic architecture. - Herman Hertzberger, Exhibition: The New Institute, Rotterdam, The Netherlands (20.09.2014-January 2015).--Provided by publisher
Aldo van Eyck by Francis Strauven( Book )

17 editions published between 1982 and 1987 in 3 languages and held by 128 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Aldo van Eyck (1918-1999) was a Dutch architect, writer, and teacher who helped redefine Modern architecture in the second half of the 20th century. As an advocate for architecture's engagement with history, culture, climate, and the lived human experience of buildings and urban spaces, he created designs that privileged place and the daily rituals in the lives of its inhabitants over universal ideals. In this volume, enlivened by 300 illustrations from the Aldo van Eyck Archive, Robert McCarter provides the first comprehensive study of Van Eyck's 50-year career since his death, guiding readers through the architect's buildings and unrealized projects, with a focus on the interior spatial experience and on the design and construction processes..." --Front jacket flap

The future of architecture by Herman Hertzberger( Book )

4 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 102 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this pamphlet, Herman Hertzberger, Anna Heringer, Jean-Philippe Vassal and other contributors opt for 'building as building up, composing, multiplying, improving and establishing: the opposite of decline'. Recognizing the need to change our lifestyle and the way we build if we want to preserve the planet for future generations, these pages offer optimism, making the case to abandon all preconceptions and imagine a new way of practicing architecture that is not a derivative or feeble reflection of today's reality. The envisioned architect is sensitive to ecology, responsible, fair, creative and communicative. The architecture of the future, as postulated in this book, should improve human conditions and dignity by acting local but using global knowledge in a global world

NHL Hoogeschool = [NHL] University : Architectuurstudio HH by Herman Hertzberger( Book )

5 editions published in 2011 in Dutch and English and held by 34 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The existing building of the NHL University, designed by the architect Abe Bonnema and dating from 1984, is an amorphous presence with its small-scale combination of building masses. Architectuurstudio HH expanded it with a new building of the same size, leaving Bonnema's building intact. The new enfolds the existing on all sides as an inclusive framework, like the frame of a picture. It is lifted into space so that the existing structure is left visible and the grounds can continue uninterrupted beneath it. Free floor spans of nearly 12 metres enable the changes in layout necessary to a modern education institute
