Papers of the Byles family, primarily letters to Loyalist Mather Byles (1707-1788) and his daughters Mary and Catherine in Boston from family and friends who fled to Halifax, N.S., during the Revolution. Also letters of Mather Byles (1735-1814) from New London, Conn., where he was minister of the First Church, describing his ministry and problems with the followers of John Rogers, and later from Halifax during his ministry there (1782-86). Letters of Mather Byles (1764-1802), describe his stay at Grenada, British West Indies, and a visit to London; letters of artist Mather Brown include accounts of his art studies and painting at Paris and London; some correspondence concerns claims to land in Amherst, N.H., by Mary and Catherine Byles. Some papers of the related Almon family as well. Volumes include an account book (1759-1837) and estate inventory of Mather Byles (1707-1788), with a list of his personal library; and commonplace book of Mary Byles (1763)

Typescripts of letters of portrait painter Mather Brown to his aunts Catharine and Mary Byles of Boston, Mass. A few letters from Catharine and Mary, and extracts from letters of Brown's cousin Mather Byles are also included. Brown, who settled in England in the 1780s, described his work on various paintings, the conditions of life for painters, his friendship with King George III, the hard economic conditions that prevailed after 1800, and his frustrations in trying to convince his sister, Peggy Brown Clark, to share the inheritance she received from the estate of their father, Gawen Brown. Letters from the painter Thomas C. Hofland, with whom Brown lived; his wife, the writer Barbara Hofland; and from Brown's executor, Shirley Forster Woolmer, describe Brown's illness and death. Copies of his will and accounts of his estate are also included
