Polyominoes : puzzles, patterns, problems, and packings by Solomon W Golomb( Book )

20 editions published between 1994 and 1996 in English and held by 626 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Posing problems and giving answers along the way, Golomb invites the reader to play with these mathematical structures and develop on understanding of their extraordinary properties. In this new edition, he addresses, for example, the properties of octominoes and enneominoes and the problem of how to cover a donut with polyominoes. An extensive bibliography has been included to guide the reader to other interesting mathematical conundrums and to more advanced mathematical theories of polyominoes

Basic concepts in information theory and coding : the adventures of secret agent 00111 by Solomon W Golomb( Book )

12 editions published between 1994 and 2010 in English and held by 305 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The field of information theory and coding has developed into a vibrant and dynamic discipline that has revolutionized all aspects of information handling, storage, and communication. It has transformed our understanding of information in areas as diverse as biology, linguistics, and philosophy." "This highly readable text provides a clear exposition of the fundamentals of discrete information theory and coding. The authors present in-depth discussions of the implications, interpretations, and examples of these basic principles, covering subjects that include information measures, Shannon's channel capacity/coding theorems, and source and channel coding concepts. Focusing on the results of practical applications of the material, the book features the use of Secret Agent 00111, a recurring character who solves information problems for a living and provides a concrete context for abstract theories; thorough treatment of noiseless self-synchronizing codes not found in any other book; a clear explanation of the Lempel-Ziv algorithm; problem sets used successfully with students at the University of Southern California." "This instructive resource is written for readers with a knowledge of basic calculus and the elementary concepts of discrete probability theory. Basic Concepts in Information Theory and Coding makes an excellent and accessible introduction to the field for researchers, professionals, and graduate-level students in communication systems, computer science, and electrical systems science."--Jacket
Signal design for good correlation for wireless communication, cryptography, and radar by Solomon W Golomb( Book )

12 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 237 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book provides a comprehensive, up-to-date description of the methodologies and the application areas, throughout the range of digital communication, in which individual signals and sets of signals with favorable correlation properties play a central role. The necessary mathematical background is presented to explain how these signals are generated and to show how they satisfy the appropriate correlation constraints. All the known methods to obtain balanced binary sequences with two-valued autocorrelation, many of them only recently discovered, are presented in depth."--Jacket

Speech spectral moment convergence. voiced-voiceless consonant contrasts in whispered speech by Solomon W Golomb( Book )

2 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Continuing progress is being made in the study of the basic statistical properties of speech. Speech waveform spectral moments have been investigated, and have been found to converge in approximately 60 to 100 seconds. The result of the moment investigations are presented in part 3 of this report. An experiment in whispered speech was concluded. A word list was compiled in which pairs of words were contrasted only by a pair of consonants having voicing-non-voicing as the primary distinguishing listener que. Tests were conducted to determine the intelligibility of the consonant contrasts in the whispered mode. Investigations into the voicing patterns of speech waveforms and speech modulation by pseudo-random sequences are currently in the planning stages. (Author)
Construction and Properties of Costas Arrays( Book )

1 edition published in 1983 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

A Costas array is an nXn permutation matrix which, when regarded as a frequency hopping pattern (n frequencies vs. n time intervals) has an optimum ambiguity function, i.e., at most one coincidence for each shift in both time and frequency. Several systematic infinite families of constructions for Costas arrays have been found, all involving primitive roots in finite fields. A summary of the known constructions is presented for all n equal to or less than 360. The smallest case for which no construction has yet been found is n = 32. The total number of distinct Costas arrays has been enumerated for n equal to or less than 12, and all the individual Costas arrays are illustrated for n equal to or less than 8. These arrays are useful as frequency hopping patterns for radar and sonar signals, and as patterns for achieving two-dimensional alignment and synchronization. (Author)
