Mathematical methods in engineering; an introduction to the mathematical treatment of engineering problems by Theodore Von Kármán( Book )

46 editions published between 1939 and 1960 in 7 languages and held by 775 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents a careful selection of the contributions presented at the Mathematical Methods in Engineering (MME10) International Symposium, held at the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra- Engineering Institute of Coimbra (IPC/ISEC), Portugal, October 21-24, 2010. The volume discusses recent developments about theoretical and applied mathematics toward the solution of engineering problems, thus covering a wide range of topics, such as: Automatic Control, Autonomous Systems, Computer Science, Dynamical Systems and Control, Electronics, Finance and Economics, Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer, Fractional Mathematics, Fractional Transforms and Their Applications, Fuzzy Sets and Systems, Image and Signal Analysis, Image Processing, Mechanics, Mechatronics, Motor Control and Human Movement Analysis, Nonlinear Dynamics, Partial Differential Equations, Robotics, Acoustics, Vibration and Control, and Wavelets
Variational principles in heat transfer; a unified Lagrangian analysis of dissipative phenomena by Maurice A Biot( Book )

16 editions published in 1970 in English and Undetermined and held by 407 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The book develops a variational treatment of heat transfer which includes heat conduction and convection. It is intended to provide the foundation of a unified analysis of irreversible processes by methods analogous to those of classical mechanics. This opens the way to a formulation of heat transfer and dissipative phenomena in complex systems by means of Lagrangian-type equations and generalized coordinates. At the same time this approach suggests many approximate procedures and drastic simplifications applicable to the practical solution of a large category of problems in physics and technology. Poroelasticity : Maurice A. Biot memorial issue by A. H.-D Cheng( Book )

3 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book treats the mechanics of porous materials infiltrated with a fluid (poromechanics), focussing on its linear theory (poroelasticity). Porous materials from inanimate bodies such as sand, soil and rock, living bodies such as plant tissue, animal flesh, or man-made materials can look very different due to their different origins, but as readers will see, the underlying physical principles governing their mechanical behaviors can be the same, making this work relevant not only to engineers but also to scientists across other scientific disciplines. Readers will find discussions of physical phenomena including soil consolidation, land subsidence, slope stability, borehole failure, hydraulic fracturing, water wave and seabed interaction, earthquake aftershock, fluid injection induced seismicity and heat induced pore pressure spalling as well as discussions of seismoelectric and seismoelectromagnetic effects. The work also explores the biomechanics of cartilage, bone and blood vessels. Chapters present theory using an intuitive, phenomenological approach at the bulk continuum level, and a thermodynamics-based variational energy approach at the micromechanical level. The physical mechanisms covered extend from the quasi-static theory of poroelasticity to poroelastodynamics, poroviscoelasticity, porothermoelasticity, and porochemoelasticity. Closed form analytical solutions are derived in details. This book provides an excellent introduction to linear poroelasticity and is especially relevant to those involved in civil engineering, petroleum and reservoir engineering, rock mechanics, hydrology, geophysics, and biomechanics

Dynamic loads on airplane structures during landing by Maurice A Biot( Book )

2 editions published in 1944 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The application of transient theory to the rational determination of dynamic loads on airplane structures during initial landing impact is discussed. Simplified procedures are described by which the distribution of the maximum attainable value of the dynamic stresses in the structure may be obtained. Illustrations of the procedure are given by numerical examples for the case of airplane wings. This indicates approximate orders of magnitude to be expected in a typical problem. The validity of the underlying simplifications and assumptions is discussed. A brief outline of the general mathematical theory of transients in undamped elastic system is presented

New Theory of Multilayered Plates by Maurice A Biot( Book )

2 editions published in 1970 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A new approach to the dynamics of multilayered plates with anisotropy and viscoelasticity is presented. Some of the layers may be constituted by thinly laminated materials giving rise to stress- couples. The theory takes into account the fundamental skin effect of solid mechanics, and the cross-sectional distortion of the layers. While much simpler than the theory of Elasticity it provides a considerable refinement of classical plate theories. Plane strain solutions are developed for simply supported and built-in plates. The damping is derived from approximate expressions which bring out the contribution of individual layers to the overall damping. Application to plates with one, two and three layers are discussed. For transverse isotropic plates three-dimensional solutions are immediately derived by superposition of plane strain solutions. This is applied to multilayered plates with rectangular, and circular plan form. (Author, modified-PL)
