Dwight D. Eisenhower a centennial bibliography by Elizabeth R Snoke( Book )

2 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 357 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1981, the Eisenhower Library in Abilene, Kansas, published an excellent selected bibliography of periodical articles and dissertations on Dwight D. Eisenhower compiled by Robert D. Bohanan (see Bibliographies and Indexes). This author's bibliography published in commemoration of the centennial of Eisenhower's birth, would be an adjunct to the Bohanan work. Thus, I have emphasized published monographs and have included periodical articles only if they were published after the early 1981 cutoff date for the Bohanan bibliography or were not listed in that collection. Most articles included here are from professional historical or military journals. Readers seeking articles in popular magazines such as Time, The Saturday Evening Post, or McCalls should search volumes of the Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature beginning with the volumes for the World War II period. Dozens if not hundreds of citations appear in the cumulated volumes of the Readers' Guide. With one exception, such articles are not included here. Elmer T. Peterson's interview of Eisenhower's mother for Better Homes and Gardens in June 1943 was so interesting and unusual that I included it. Besides books and journal articles, I have also included a few major microform collections of documents or oral history collections that are sold by microform publishers and thus should be available at major university libraries or other research centers around the country. No bibliography contains all the existing sources. After first concentrating on Eisenhower himself, I expanded my focus to include works by and about personalities associated with him, as those works contain material about him too

Mobilization by Charles A Endress( Book )

2 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 220 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This bibliography provides those with access to the Combined Arms Research Library a starting point in the search for information relating to the mobilization and integration of reserve forces during national emergencies in the twentieth century. Reserve components played a significant, and in some cases paramount, role in the national defense during this period. Nonetheless, the process of reserve establishments of World War I and II are little understood today by those responsible for utilizing reservists in future emergencies requiring the total force. With few exceptions, the historical examples cited in this bibliography concern the Army National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve. Titles relating to the role of the reserves in the scheme of national defense, however, relate to all the services. Contents: Pre-World War I, World War I Era, World War II and Aftermath, Korean War, The Berlin Crisis and the 1960s, The Vietnam War Era, The Post Vietnam War Era
The defence of Duffer's Drift by E. D Swinton( Book )

3 editions published between 1988 and 1991 in English and held by 219 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This tale of a dream is dedicated to the "gilded Popinjays" and "hired assassins" of the British nation, especially those who are now knocking at the door, to wit the very junior. It embodies some recollections of things actually done and undone in South Africa, 1899-1902. It is hoped that its fantastic guise may really help to emphasise the necessity for the practical application of some very old principles, and assist to an appreciation of what may happen when they are not applied, even on small operations. This practical application has often been lost sight of in the stress of the moment, with dire results, quite unrealised until the horrible instant of actual experience. Should this tale, by arousing the imagination, assist to prevent in the future even one such case of disregard of principles, it will not have been written in vain. The dreams are not anticipations, but merely a record of petty experiences against one kind of enemy in one kind of country only, with certain deductions based thereupon. But from these, given the conditions, it is not difficult to deduce the variations suitable for other countries, or for those occasions when a different foe with different methods of fighting and different weapons has to be met

A short history of the NCO by L. R Arms( Book )

1 edition published in 1991 in English and held by 215 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph is a short history of the U.S. Army Noncommissioned Officer (NCO). The history of the United States Army and of the noncommissioned officer began in 1775, with the birth of the Continental Army. The American noncommissioned officer did not copy the British. He, like the American Army itself, blended traditions of the French, British, and Prussian armies into a uniquely American institution. As the years progressed, the American political system, disdain for the aristocracy, social attitudes, and westward expansion further removed the U.S. Army noncommissioned officer from his European counterparts and created a truly American noncommissioned officer. The history is divided into the following wars/time periods: the American Revolution, the War of 1812, Expansion Westward, the 1820s and 1830s, the Mexican-American War, the 1850s, the Civil War, the Indian Wars, the 1880s and 1890s, the Spanish-American War, Modernization, World War I, the Interwar Period, World War II, the Post-World War II Era, and the Modern Era. The work is produced in the hope that it will prove useful to the wide variety of NCOs in the field and to visitors of the U.S. Army Museum of the Noncommissioned Officer who seek additional information on NCO history
Amicicide : the problem of friendly fire in modern war by Charles R Shrader( Book )

1 edition published in 1982 in English and held by 214 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From surveys of much of the existing literature on World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, the author has extracted examples of friendly fire involving U.S. ground forces and has categorized them according to types of incidents. In this narrative, he draws tentative conclusions about the causes and effects of friendly fire and offers recommendations for those who expect to study the subject further
Generalship its diseases and their cure : a study of the personal factor in command by J. F. C Fuller( Book )

1 edition published in 1987 in English and held by 214 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the summer of 1921 I was lunching at the Restaurant la Rue with the Deputy Chief of the French General staff when he told me the following story: At the battle of Waterloo, Colonel Clement, an infantry commander, fought with the most conspicuous bravery; but unfortunately was shot through the head. Napoleon, hearing of his gallantry and misfortune, gave instructions for him to be carried into a farm where Larrey the surgeon-general was operating. One glance convinced Larrey that his case was desperate, so taking up a saw he removed the top of his skull and placed his brains on the table. Just as he had finished, in rushed an aide-de-camp, shouting: "Is General Clement here?" Clement, hearing him, sat up and exclaimed: "No! but Colonel Clement is." "Oh, mon general," cried the aide-decamp, embracing him, "the Emperor was overwhelmed when we heard of your gallantry, and has promoted you on the field of battle to the rank of General." Clement rubbed his eyes, got, off the table, clapped the top of his skull on his head and was about to leave the farm, when Larrey shouted after him: "Mon general--your brains!" To which the gallant Frenchman, increasing his speed, shouted back: "Now that I am a general I shall no longer require them!" In this modest study my object is to prove, that though Clement was wrong about brains, without his courage there can be no true generalship
