Building the nation : N.F.S. Grundtvig and Danish national identity by John A Hall( Book )

13 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and Undetermined and held by 91 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Denmark became a nation amidst the turbulence of the nineteenth century, an era plagued by war, bankruptcy, and territorial loss. 'Building the nation' is an insightful study of this formation, emphasizing the crucial role of N.F.S. Grundtvig, the father of modern Denmark. Persevering through years of humiliation, internal conflict, and occupation, Denmark now boasts one of the world's most stable and democratic political systems, as well as one of its richest economies. From disaster to success, 'Building the nation' emphasizes the role of national icons and social movements in the formation of Denmark. The poet, political philosopher, clergyman, and founding father N.F.S. Grundtvig is compared to Rousseau and Durkheim in France, to Herder and Fichte in Germany, and to other great thinkers in the United States and Ireland. During his lifetime, the kingdom of Denmark transformed from monarchy to democracy and moved from agrarianism to a modern economy - evolutions to which Grundtvig himself contributed. He has become a fundamental and inescapable reference-point for discussions about nation, democracy, freedom, religion, and education in Denmark and abroad.0Situating Grundtvig in both the history of Denmark and the intellectual history of nineteenth-century Europe, 'Building the nation' argues for the centrality of his influence in the making of modern Denmark, as well as the continuing influence of his work

The school for life : N.F.S. Grundtvig on education for the people by Edward Broadbridge( Recording )

2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 36 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872) produced a major body of work in the fields of theology, education, literature, politics, and history. He was also a poet, a hymn-writer, and a translator. In particular, however, it is his educational writings that over the years have attracted international attention-from the USA in the west to Japan in the east. In recognition of his influence the European Union called its adult education project 'the Grudtvig programme'. As part of its agenda to digitalise and translate some of this vast output, the Grundtvig Study Centre at the University of Aarhus is pleased to publish this broad selection of Grundtvig;s writings on education in a completely new translation. The texts vary in form from poems and songs to articles in periodicals, introductions to books, an open letter to the Norwegians and a private letter to the King of Denmark. These texts, taken together, will provide a solid basis for international scholars without knowledge of Danish to be able to work closely with Grundtvig's ideas on education for the people."--P [4] of cover

12 editions published in 2008 in 3 languages and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book Ove Korsgaard, the well-known scholar of democracy, examines how the concept people has changed throughout Danish history. Interpretations and uses of this notion have had dramatic influence on the building of the Danish society. The struggle of the people is the struggle for power in society. Until The Age of Enlightenment the concept was used to categorise the subjects of the master of the house, the subjects of the King, the subjects of God. Later the notion became a revolutionary key concept. The people was now regarded as sovereign. Today we are confronted with new questions
