Environmental effects of marine finfish aquaculture by Barry Hargrave ( )
17 editions published between 2005 and 2011 in English and held by 443 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Environmental risks associated with large-scale marine finfish cage aquaculture have led to claims that the long-term sustainability of the industry is in doubt. Methods and models currently used to measure near and far-field environmental effects of finfish mariculture and to assess their implications for management are presented in 20 chapters arranged in four sections (Eutrophication, Sedimentation and Benthic Impacts, Changes in Trophic Structure and Function, and Managing Environmental Risks). Case studies to show how models may be used to predict environmental changes and provide management tools to minimize potentially adverse environmental risks are presented. The volume is of interest to those working towards sustainable development of mariculture, including graduate students, research scientists, environmental managers and decision-makers with regulatory responsibilities. Environmental Studies for Sustainable Aquaculture (ESSA) 2004 symposium report ( Book )
2 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 29 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This report presents a project outline, completion report, extended abstracts from oral presentations and reviewer's comments arising from a symposium held at the completion of a three year (2000-2003) study (Environmental Studies for Sustainable Aquaculture, or ESSA) conducted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Participants from federal and provincial government departments, the salmon aquaculture industry, universities and the general public met from 27 to 29 January, 2004 at Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Dartmouth. Presentations summarized research related to assessing potential far field effects of salmon aquaculture. Study sites were located in three areas (Bay d'Espoir in Newfoundland, Letang Inlet in New Brunswick and south-central British Columbia's Broughton Archipelago) where salmon aquaculture is concentrated in Canada. Physical circulation models describing the distribution of dissolved oxygen, nutrients and particulate matter provided a framework for considering chemical and biological variables in water and sediments that might be used as tracers for dispersion of dissolved and particulate wastes from farm sites. The observations were related to habitat management questions that require predictions and advice for monitoring of far field environmental effects of salmon aquaculture. An over-view and summary of research results from science and management perspectives are included.--Document
A scientific review of the potential environmental effects of aquaculture in aquatic ecosystems ( Book )
1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 26 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Biogeochemical observations to assess benthic impacts of organic enrichment from marine aquaculture in the Western Isles region of the Bay of Fundy, 1994 by Barry Hargrave ( Book )
9 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This report adds to the growing base of marine environmental information in the Western Isles region by comparing different methods that may be used to assess changes in geotechnical, geochemical, and biological properties in subtidal sediment under salmon aquaculture sites. The investigators measured sediment profiles of modal grain size, water content, salinity, redox potentials, ammonium, sulfides, sulfate, organic carbon and nitrogen, benthic dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide flux, and macrofauna biomass at 22 stations in the region. Eleven sites were located under salmon net-pens and 11 sites at distances over 50 meters from the pens served as reference (control) locations. The report describes the sampling and analytical methods used and presents the data for the different variables measured in the study by station number in four appendices

Observations of dissolved nutrients, phytoplankton biomass, sedimentation and sediment organic matter in St. Georges Bay, 1978 by Barry Hargrave ( Book )
3 editions published between 1981 and 1982 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Profiles of temperature, salinity, dissolved nutrients, suspended particulate carbon, nitrogen and plant pigments were derived from samples collected from January to November, 1978, at a central station in St. Georges Bay. High levels of dissolved nitrate, nitrite, ammonia and silicate in the water column occurred during January and February which coincided with seasonal maximum of chlorophyll a and organic matter. Sedimentation of particulture organic matter and concentrations in surface sediments during the summer were similar to levels observed during 1977
