Structures compressives sur Mars by Augustin Fernandez-Chicarro( )

1 edition published in 1983 in French and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study brinqs new clues on the compressive structures (ridges and scarps) of the planet Mars. It reveals a planet wide distribution of ridges (well outside the major mare-like plains regions), as well as significant control of ridge systems structural patterns by both obvious and subtle multi-ring impact basins (in addition to regional and global stress patterns control). We first consider a review of ridge systems on the Moon and Mercury. A photo-geolbgical analysis of Mars documents a detailed cartography of ridges and geologie units, whose purpose is to propose a simple stratigraphic classification. All mapped ridges (more than 16,000) were also filed, according to their morphology and geologic environment, then digitized. All of this leads to a new global computer cartography, used in a distribution study of the different types of ridges, and their association to obvious and subtle impact basins. A regional study of 4 impact basins was then conducted, together with a review of crater formation and new data on polar wandering. It appears that impact structures can control ridge systems structural patterns. Ridge systems patteins can be used as a tool for discovering new subtle multi-ring basins, by the presence of concentric ridges on subtle intercrater plains. Mars appears then as a planet where compressive tectonics have played a major role during its geologic hlstory, a history that contrasts in extent, style and distribution with the Moon and Mercury
