High-energy spectroscopic astrophysics by Steven Michael Kahn( )
18 editions published in 2005 in English and Undetermined and held by 642 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"After three decades of intense research in X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy, the time was ripe to summarize basic knowledge on X-ray and gamma-ray spectroscopy for interested students and researchers ready to become involved in new high-energy missions. This volume exposes both the scientific basics and modern methods of high-energy spectroscopic astrophysics. The emphasis is on physical principles and observing methods rather than a discussion of particular classes of high-energy objects, but many examples and new results are included in the three chapters as well."--Jacket

This multi-author volume presents remininiscences about Academician Ya. B. Zeldovich who was undoubtedly one of the greatest physicists and cosmologists of the twentieth century
Lighthouses of the universe : the most luminous celestial objects and their use for cosmology : proceedings of the MPA/ESO/MPE/USM Joint Astronomy Conference held in Garching, Germany, 6-10 August 2001 by MPA/ESO/MPE/USM Joint Astronomy Conference( Book )
5 editions published between 2002 and 2011 in English and held by 116 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The book reviews the present status of understanding the nature of the most luminous objects in the Universe, connected with supermassive black holes and supermassive stars, clusters of galaxies and ultraluminous galaxies, sources of gamma-ray bursts and relativistic jets. Leading experts give overviews of essential physical mechanisms involved, discuss formation and evolution of these objects as well as prospects for their use in cosmology, as probes of the intergalactic medium at high redshifts and as a tool to study the end of dark ages. The theoretical models are complemented by new exciting results from orbital and ground-based observatories such as Chandra, XMM-Newton, HST, SDSS, VLT, Keck, and many others

Jets at all scales : proceedings of the 275th Symposium of the International Astronomical Union held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, September 13-17, 2010 by Union astronomique internationale( Book )
4 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 92 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Research on all aspects of jet physics has made dramatic progress in recent years. Numerical simulations, semi-analytical models, and observations across the entire electromagnetic spectrum have shed new light on the formation, collimation, propagation, interaction, and radiation of astrophysical jets on all scales. The proceedings of IAU Symposium 275 present an up-to-date account of our current knowledge of jets and outflows in different astronomical situations, covering a vast range of phenomena, from protostellar jets up to extragalactic jets. Reviews by the leading scientists in the field set the context for lively discussions and contributed papers on the most varied aspects of jet physics, fostering links between these usually disparate areas"--Page 4 of cover

Growing Black Holes: Accretion in a Cosmological Context Proceedings of the MPA/ESO/MPE/USM Joint Astronomy Conference Held at Garching, Germany, 21-25 June 2004 by A Merloni( )
6 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 42 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Supermassive black holes are now believed to play an important role in the evolution of the Universe. Every respectable galaxy hosts in its center a black hole that appears to regulate the growth of the galaxy itself. In this book, leading experts in the field review the most recent theoretical and observational results on the following topics: * formation and growth of the first black holes in the Universe and their role in the formation and evolution of galaxies * the physics of black-hole accretion and the production of relativistic jets * binary black-hole mergers and gravitational radiation. Theoretical work is supplemented by the most recent exciting results from space and ground based observatories. This volume is useful research and reference tool for the entire astrophysical community

Growing black holes accretion in a cosmological context : proceedings of the MPA/ESO/MPE/USM joint astronomy conference held in Garching, Germany, 21-25 June 2004 by MPA/ESO/MPE/USM Joint Astronomy Conference( )
4 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Supermassive black holes (SMBH) are among the most spectacular objects in the Universe, and their study sheds light on fundamental physical phenomena occurring in their immediate vicinity, such as accretion of gas and general relativistic effects. However, in recent years, it has been established that SMBH are not just interesting laboratories of strong gravity and high-energy astrophysics, but have direct impact on the evolution of the large scale structure and have an influence on the appearance of our Universe. For this reason, scientists from the extra-galactic astronomy, cosmology and accretion physics communities were brought together to discuss the implications of the connection between the supermassive black hole growth and galaxy formation. The Conference "Growing Black Holes: Accretion in a Cosmological Context'' was held in Garching during June 21-25, 2004 as a part of the joint MPA/MPE/ESO/USM Astronomy conference series. The meeting was attended by about 170 scientists from more than 20 countries all over the world. These proceedings contain the excellent review and invited talks that summarized the state of the art in the research on the respective topic as well as the equally interesting contributed talks and poster papers, many of which presented original ideas or latest observational results. This book is thus a useful research and reference tool for the entire astrophysical community. TOC:First Supermassive Black Holes and Structure Formation.- Observations of Supermassive Black Holes at Higher Redshift.- Observations of Super Massive Black Holes in the Local Universe.- The Case of Sagittarius A*.- Interaction of Supermassive Black Holes with Their Environment.- Physics of Accretion Discs Around Supermassive Black Holes.- Black Hole-Black Hole Mergers and Gravitational Waves.- Jeds, Outflows and QSO Feedback.- The Cosmological Evolution of Active Galactic Nuclei and the X-Ray Background
