Pierre Bourdieu : capital simbólico y magia social ( Book )
2 editions published in 2012 in Spanish and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

1 edition published in 1998 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
1 edition published in 2007 in French and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
To analyze the construction of platic surgery, it is necessary to understand what conditions of possibility enabled this "futile" surgery to be practiced and to answer the question of what made operations on healthy bodies socially acceptable. Our work had to widen its object to the sociohistorical analysis of construction of the specialty using the matrix of aesthetic surgery : plastic surgery. Also, it was necessary for us to work on the history of the relation of cosmetic surgery to its matrix and on the fights of competition between plastics surgeons and aesthetics surgeons whose goal is the definition of the legitimate practice, on the basis of its contours, of its teaching and the construction of an esthetics market with its various components. Finally, the "futile" object became an analyzer of the transformations of the surgical space which makes it possible to observe the struggles and competitions between surgeons and doctors

Fight Against Cancer by Patrice Pinell( Book )
1 edition published in 2002 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
How did cancer, a pathology identified for over 2000 years, turn suddenly at the beginning of the twentieth century into the scourge of our modern times? Why and how did an illness that is not an epidemic, and is not contagious, end up being considered a threat to the very balance of society? Between the two World Wars an illness that mainly affects adults over fifty years old became so prominent that it superseded both tuberculosis and syphilis in importance. As Patrice Pinell shows, the effect of cancer in France before World War Two reached far beyond the question of its mortality rates. Pinell's socio-historical approach to the early developments in the fight against cancer describes how scientific, therapeutic, philanthropic, ethical, social, economics and political interest combined to transform medicine

1 edition published in 2009 in French and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
With the outbreak of the AIDS epidemic in Switzerland, several protagonists -highly committed to homosexual issues or active in areas of senior public administration -became involved in the anti-AIDS cause and policy implementation. In the course of the rallying process~ however, the cause was progressively restructured and carried on by new participants. This study is dedicated to the analysis of subsequent transformations of issues and objectives in the fight against AlOS and the impact of these transformations of the activists committed to the cause. The first part of the study retraces the structuring and transformations of the fight against AlDS from the beginning of the epidemic until 2005. Adopting the perspective of an analysis of social movements' collective identity, the study emphasizes the Fluctuations of commitment to the cause and the transformations of the social movements' morphology, which contributes to redefining the cause. The second part of the study analyses (1) the motives behind the support for the cause, (2) the effects of the commitment, focusing on the life course of seven activists, and (3) the institutional socialization of social movements, understood as plausibility structures of identity affirmation. This work is based on analyses of records sources and interviews, as well as on a quantitative survey carried out by the members and ex-members of 14 homosexual or anti AlDS associations and, finally, on several data resulting From ethnographic observations
