A first course in noncommutative rings by
T. Y Lam(
Book
)
31 editions published between 1991 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 863 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"A First Course in Noncommutative Rings, an outgrowth of the author's lectures at the University of California at Berkeley, is intended as a textbook for a onesemester course in basic ring theory. By aiming the level of writing at the novice rather than the connoisseur and by stressing the role of examples and motivation, the author has produced a text that is suitable not only for use in a graduate course, but also for selfstudy in the subject by interested graduate students. More than 400 exercises testing the understanding of the general theory in the text are included in this new edition."Jacket

Lectures on modules and rings by
T. Y Lam(
Book
)
16 editions published between 1998 and 2012 in English and held by 518 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This is the long awaited sequel to Lam's earlier GTM 131 "A First Course in Noncommutative Ring Theory" which received the following praise in the Monthly: "The book is beautifully written with many illuminating examples and exercises ... Reading Lam's book reminded me of my own delight in discovering the structure theory of rings and its applications ... I eagerly await Lam's second volume and confidently recommend his first."Lance Small This new book can be read independently from the first volume and is intended to be used for lecturing, seminar and selfstudy, and for general reference. It is focused more on specific topics in order to introduce the reader to a wealth of basic and useful ideas without the hindrance of heavy machinery or undue abstractions. This volume is particularly userfriendly with its abundance of examples illustrating the theory virtually at every step. A large number of carefully chosen exercises serves the dual purpose of providing practice to newcomers to the field, and offering a rich additional source of information to experts. A direct approach is used in order to present the material in an efficient and economic way thereby introducing the reader to a considerable amount of interesting ring theory without being dragged through endless preparatory material

Exercises in classical ring theory by
T. Y Lam(
Book
)
33 editions published between 1994 and 2010 in English and German and held by 500 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"An outgrowth of the author's lecture courses and seminars at the University of California at Berkeley, this book provides an excellent introduction to problem solving in ring theory. It can be used either as a companion to the author's A First Course in Noncommutative Rings (from which most of the exercises are selected) or as a source for independent study. For students and researchers alike, this book will also serve as a handy reference for much of the "folklore" in classical ring theory not usually covered in textbooks." "This second edition features more than 80 new exercises, ranging from mildly routine to very challenging. Many of these additional exercises are appearing here for the first time."Jacket

Introduction to quadratic forms over fields by
T. Y Lam(
Book
)
13 editions published between 1900 and 2005 in English and held by 301 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"A new version of the author's Algebraic Theory of Quadratic Forms, this book gives a modern and selfcontained introduction to the theory of quadratic forms over fields of characteristic not two." "The presentation of the main material in this book is interspersed with a copious number of carefully chosen examples to illustrate the general theory. This feature, together with a stock of some 280 exercises for the thirteen chapters, greatly enhances the pedagogical value of this book, both as a graduate text and as a reference work for researchers in algebra, number theory, field theory, algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, and geometric topology."Jacket

Induction theorems for Grothendieck groups and Whitehead groups of finite groups by
T. Y Lam(
Book
)
3 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
For an abelian category C, the Grothendieck group K(O)(C) of C is an abelian group which solves the universal problem of finding 'additive' maps of Obj C into abelian groups. The Whitehead group K(1) C is the abelian group which furnishes a 'universal determinant theory' for C. The dissertation conducts a survey of certain techniques useful in the study of these groups. The groups are treated in some generality in the first chapter, then the survey is restricted to group rings, i.e. to the case when C is the category of Z pimodules or else the category of projective Z pimodules, for finite groups pi. In this setting, the crucial (and most subtle) question seems to be that of determining the torsion of the Whitehead group, and this is chiefly what is done in the last two chapters. (Author)
