Surreal encounters : collecting the marvellous : works from the collections of Roland Penrose, Edward James, Gabrielle Keiller and Ulla and Heiner Pietzsch( Book )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 116 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book brings together over 160 of the finest surrealist artworks by legendary artists including Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Rene Magritte, Joan Miro and Man Ray. The works hail from the four renowned and extraordinary private collections of Edward James, Roland Penrose, Gabrielle Keiller and Ulla and Heiner Pietzsch, and together offer a superb overview of surrealist art. Ten essays explore the different origins, historical contexts and creative urges behind these collections. Artworks, perhaps more than anything else that one can acquire, are objects of desire and surrealist artworks even more so. The sheer quality of the works acquired (and, in the case of the Pietzsches, still being acquired) is astonishing and, while passionate about their private visions, all the collectors have been mindful of contributing something to the public good. The collections complement each other to an extraordinary degree and allow us to follow some of the artists' careers from beginning to end. By uniting them, exciting new juxtapositions emerge along with a fuller and richer picture of the surrealist movement as a whole
Ron Mueck by Keith Hartley( Book )

2 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 92 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ron Mueck's sculptures are all of the human figure, some smaller than life-size, some larger. They portray us, members of the human race, as we progress from birth towards death: as babies, children, adolescents, adults, and as old people. He shocks us into reassessing ourselves in our existential nakedness with the uncanny realism of his figures. This short book, written by Keith Hartley, examines the psychological impact that Mueck's sculptures have on their viewers and illustrates all the new works that Mueck has made over the last couple of years." --Book Jacket

Warhol - Basquiat by Kunstforum Wien( Book )

2 editions published in 2013 in German and held by 34 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Kunstforum Wien is presenting a major retrospective of the works of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The two artists undertook numerous collaborations in 1984 / 85, which provide compelling testimony to the multi-faceted cross-fertilization between these two so disparate artistic personalities. Individual works by both artists are on view alongside the collaborative efforts. A monumental Retrospective Painting unites some of Warhol's legendary screen-print subjects: from the Campbell's Soup Can and Marilyn to his Flowers and Electric Chair. Major works by Basquiat will also be featured: paintings and drawings executed between 1981 and 1988. While his early phase still bears traces of the graffiti style, the later images are more intricately detailed. Basquiat's oeuvre represents one of the great milestones in the New Painting movement of the 1980s, an authentically expressive artistic testimony that diverged from the carefully cultivated and staged postmodernism of the painter princes. 0Exhibition: Kunstforum, Vienna, Austria (16.10.2013-2.2.2014)
