Correspondence, journals, receipts, account books, drawings, photographs, deeds, product samples, stocks, and ephemera reveal Sturgis' professional, personal and family life. Series I. includes correspondence (1864-1888) primarily related to design projects such as Boit's villa, "The Rocks," Perkins' house, "Pinebank," and Codman's estate, "The Grange." Letters from Charles Brigham (1866-1870) reveal the challenges involved in conducting a transatlantic business partnership and letters from Stamford Pottery provide a narrative of the difficulties in shipping terra cotta tiles for the Museum of Fine Arts across the Atlantic without breakage. Other materials in series include: legal papers concerning Sturgis versus Jonathan Preston for land misassessed on Dartmouth Street and Huntington Avenue, drawings of design for James K. Colling's house, leases, invoices for importations of furniture, decoration, riding equipment and the papers from settlement of Brigham, Sturgis firm with remaining client and project lists. Series II. (1866-1873) primarily invoices, bills and accounting information of business and of travel expenses. Series III. (1853-1866) contains very descriptive travel narratives of experiences in Egypt, Palestine, Geneva, Milan, Dresden, the Alps, Neuchatel, and on the Nile, some with sketches. Series IV. (1852-1888) includes letters from and to Sturgis from family, primarily Sturgis children and his father, Russell Sturgis. Series V., Papers of Frances Anne Codman Sturgis (Sturgis' wife) include a diary from 1876 and letters received from John, Russell Sturgis, and children (1858-1887). Remainder of series includes clippings of Sturgis' death, condolence letters from friends and family, genealogical material of Ogden family and photographs of San Diego Exposition, San Gabriel Mission and Lake Louise

Collection contains five numbered series of architectural sketchbooks, which include notes and orders by clients and notes and daybooks relating to the Board of Schoolhouse Commissioners, and one numbered series of notebooks on "Trips abroad"; the Athenaeum lacks ser. 1, nos. 17, 69, 93, and ser 4, no. 3, 10, 11, 12. With: a typewritten chronological list of clients from 1886 to 1937; a legal agreement transferring ownership of the firm from Sturgis, upon his retirement in 1932, to Sturgis Associates, a five person partnership; and manuscript notes for a history of the Boston Society of Architects during the period 1898-1918

Collection consists of ca. 525 architectural drawings including landscape architecture plans, contour drawings, planting diagrams and blueprints. There are also detailed drawings of fences, garden paths, outbuildings and gates. The drawings were done mostly in the 1920s and 1930s primarily for clients in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, with a few for clients in Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri and North Carolina. They demonstrate the process of landscape design through the various types which are included, such as rough sketches, sketches on older blueprints, preliminary drawings, alternative drawings, final plans and final blueprints. Collection also includes photographs of a few completed projects. Some folders contain drawings by architects who designed the houses on the estates; among these are designs by R. Clipston Sturgis, Mott B. Schmidt and Leigh French among others

A collection of 105 bookplates designed and/or engraved by Sidney Lawton Smith, likely compiled in this album by his daughter, Amy Gertrude Smith. Most of the bookplates are untrimmed with plate marks intact or adhered to large sheets of paper. Many are signed by S.L. Smith and/or stamped in red with his monogram (SLS underscored within an oval). Some appear in varying states or in variant ink colors. Several are proofs, as is evident by their untrimmed state and manuscript annotations "to be returned to Sidney L. Smith, 22 Cumberland St., Boston, Mass." Additionally, a few bear an inscription from S.L. Smith to Amy G. Smith
