Lectures on invariant theory by I Dolgachev( Book )

12 editions published between 2002 and 2004 in English and Undetermined and held by 277 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This introduction to the main ideas of algebraic and geometric invariant theory assumes only a minimal background in algebraic geometry, algebra and representation theory. Topics covered include the symbolic method for computation of invariants on the space of homogeneous forms, the problem of finite-generatedness of the algebra of invariants, and the theory of covariants and constructions of categorical and geometric quotients. Throughout, the emphasis is on concrete examples that originate in classical algebraic geometry. Written in an accessible style with many examples and exercises, the book offers a novel discussion of possible linearizations of actions and the variation of quotients under the change of linearization
Enriques surfaces by François R Cossec( Book )

18 editions published in 1989 in 3 languages and held by 274 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the first of two volumes representing the current state of knowledge about Enriques surfaces which occupy one of the classes in the classification of algebraic surfaces. Recent improvements in our understanding of algebraic surfaces over fields of positive characteristic allowed us to approach the subject from a completely geometric point of view although heavily relying on algebraic methods. Some of the techniques presented in this book can be applied to the study of algebraic surfaces of other types. We hope that it will make this book of particular interest to a wider range of research mathematicians and graduate students. Acknowledgements. The undertaking of this project was made possible by the support of several institutions. Our mutual cooperation began at the University of Warwick and the Max Planck Institute of Mathematics in 1982/83. Most of the work in this volume was done during the visit of the first author at the University of Michigan in 1984-1986. The second author was supported during all these years by grants from the National Science Foundation
Algebraic geometry : Korea-Japan Conference in honor of Igor Dolgachev's 60th birthday, July 5-9, 2004, Korea Institute for Advanced Study, Seoul, Korea by Korea-Japan Conference on Algebraic Geometry( Book )

11 editions published between 2006 and 2007 in English and held by 195 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This volume contains the proceedings of the Korea-Japan Conference on Algebraic Geometry in honor of Igor Dolgachev on his sixtieth birthday. The articles in this volume explore a wide variety of problems that illustrate interactions between algebraic geometry and other branches of mathematics. Among the topics covered by this volume are algebraic curve theory, algebraic surface theory, moduli space, automorphic forms, Mordell-Weil lattices, and automorphisms of hyperkahler manifolds."--Jacket

Classical algebraic geometry : a modern view by I Dolgachev( Book )

14 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 154 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Algebraic geometry has benefited enormously from the powerful general machinery developed in the latter half of the twentieth century. The cost has been that much of the research of previous generations is in a language unintelligible to modern workers, in particular, the rich legacy of classical algebraic geometry, such as plane algebraic curves of low degree, special algebraic surfaces, theta functions, Cremona transformations, the theory of apolarity and the geometry of lines in projective spaces. The author's contemporary approach makes this legacy accessible to modern algebraic geometers and to others who are interested in applying classical results. The vast bibliography of over 600 references is complemented by an array of exercises that extend or exemplify results given in the book"--

Galois cohomology by Jean-Pierre Serre( Book )

2 editions published in 1968 in Russian and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is an updated English translation of "Cohomologie Galoisienne", published more than 30 years ago as one of the very first Lecture Notes in Mathematics (LNM 5). It includes a reproduction of an influential paper of R. Steinberg, together with some new material and an expanded bibliography
Hilbert by Constance Reid( Book )

3 editions published in 1977 in Russian and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

If the life of any 20th century mathematician can be said to be a history of mathematics in his time, it is that of David Hilbert. To the enchanted young mathematicians and physicists who flocked to study with him in Gottingen before and between the World Wars, he seemed mathematics personified, the very air around him "scientifically electric." His remarkably prescient proposal in 1900 of twenty-three problems for the coming century set the course of much subsequent mathematics and remains a feat that no scientist in any field has been able to duplicate. When he died, Nature remarked that there was scarcely a mathematician in the world whose work did not derive from that of Hilbert. Constance Reid's classic biography is a moving, nontechnical account of the passionate scientific life of this man - from the early days in Konigsberg, when his revolutionary work was dismissed as "theology," to the golden years in Gottingen before Hitler came to power and within a few months destroyed the entire Hilbert school. The Copernicus paperback edition makes this book available to new generations of mathematicians who know the name Hilbert, which is everywhere in mathematics, but do not know the man
