Still more distant journeys : the artistic emigrations of Lasar Segall by Stephanie D'Alessandro( Book )

5 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 208 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Exhibition catalog devoted to the entire output of Lasar Segall is currently the most comprehensive overview of the artist and his work. The exhibition itself, one of the most complete retrospectives of Segall ever displayed, was seen only in Chicago and New York. Texts cover Segall's immigration to Germany (1905) and to Brazil (1924), and his artistic biography, highlighting his participation in the Dresdner Sezession as a key figure in the development of German expressionism and his subsequent significance in Brazilian modernism. Includes supplementary documentation, as well as a large number of photographs, ephemera, and publications. The exhibition included over 220 paintings, watercolors, prints, and drawings; virtually all of them are reproduced here in color or b/w"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58

Lasar Segall (b. Lithuania 1891, lived and worked in Brazil - d. 1957) began during first trips around Brazil in 1912 to make making notes and drawings in small notebooks, registering his experiences in the ships while crossing the Atlantic. These drawings would later become inspiring notes for his oil painting "Navio de emigrantes", created between 1939 and 1942, during the WW II. The large format painting is an allegory and homage to 20th century immigration and is the central piece of the present exhibition, which also includes Segall's drawings, prints, sculptures, photographs and documents related with the creative process of this grand canvas. Exhibition curated by Vera d'Horta, Pierina Camargo and Rosa Esteves and the catalogue includes contributions by Celso Lafer, Jorge Coli, Paulo Sergio Duarte, and Moacy Scliar
