Chaos: An Introduction to Dynamical Systems was developed and classtested by a distinguished team of authors at two universities through their teaching of courses based on the material. Intended for courses in nonlinear dynamics offered in either Mathematics or Physics, the text requires only calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra as prerequisites. Spanning the wide reach of nonlinear dynamics throughout mathematics, natural and physical science, Chaos: An Introduction to Dynamical, Systems develops and explains the most intriguing and fundamental elements of the topic, and examines their broad implications

Differential equations, chaos and variational problems by
Vasile Staicu(
Book
)
2 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Differential equations are a fast evolving branch of mathematics and one of the mathematical tools most used by scientists and engineers. This book gathers a collection of original articles and stateoftheart contributions, written by highly distinguished researchers working in differential equations, delaydifferential equations, differential inclusions, variational problems, Young measures, control theory, dynamical systems, chaotic systems and their relations with physical systems. The forefront of research in these areas is represented in this volume. The book and all contributions are dedicated to Arrigo Cellina and James A. Yorke on their 65th anniversary. Their remarkable scientific career covered all the above areas and was one of the main driving forces behind the work of many of the authors and the editor of this volume. For researchers and graduate students in mathematics, physics and engineering, the material in this book will be a valuable resource, and a tool for everyone working in differential equations, chaos and variational problems. It brings the reader to the frontiers of research in the areas mentioned above and will stimulate further research

In order that x = 0 be asymptotically stable for x' = A(t)x + Bx for every exponentially stable system x' = A(t)x, it is necessary and sufficient that B = alpha I for some alpha = or <0. (Author)

Identifying perturbations which preserve asymptotic stability by
Aaron Strauss(
Book
)
4 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Let the zero solution be uniformasymptotically stable for x' = f(t, x). Estimates are established in terms of the rate of approach to zero of the solutions of x' = f(t, x), on the magnitude of g(t, x) in order that the zero solution be uniformasymptotically stable for x' = f(t, x) + g(t, x). A new proof and slight extension of Hahn's theorem is given, using these estimates. If f is homogeneous of degree k, then uniformasymptotic stability is preserved by g(t, x) = o(/x/superscript k). (Author)

Theoretical Investigations of Chaotic Dynamics by
James A Yorke(
Book
)
5 editions published between 1987 and 1993 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Problems arising in the area of nonlinear vibrations were studied. Essentially equations such as that for a periodically forced, damped pendulum are capable of exhibiting behavior which was unsuspected even 10 years ago and the principal investigator was in the forefront to the effort to explain these mysteries. It was he who coined the term 'chaos' and the students and publications here identified are confined to that topic. Dr. Yorke reports on work to determine the factual dimension of attracting sets for differential equations together with some vigorous results on the dependence of such sets on equation parameters

Chaos and fractals : the mathematics behind the computer graphics by
Robert L Devaney(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1989 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
The terms chaos and fractals have received widespread attention in recent years. The alluring computer graphics images associated with these terms have heightened interest among scientists in these ideas. This volume contains the introductory survey lectures delivered in the American Mathematical Society Short Course, Chaos and Fractals: The Mathematics Behind the Computer Graphics, on August 67, 1988, given in conjunction with the AMS Centennial Meeting in Providence, Rhode Island. In his overview, Robert L. Devaney introduces such key topics as hyperbolicity, the period doubling route to chaos, chaotic dynamics, symbolic dynamics and the horseshoe, and the appearance of fractals as the chaotic set for a dynamical system. Linda Keen and Bodil Branner discuss the Mandelbrot set and Julia sets associated to the complex quadratic family z > z² + c. Kathleen T. Alligood, James A. Yorke, and Philip J. Holmes discuss some of these topics in higher dimensional settings, including the Smale horseshoe and strange attractors. Jenny Harrison and Michael F. Barnsley give an overview of fractal geometry and its applications. from dust jacket
