A world without walls : freedom, development, free trade and global governance by Mike Moore( Book )

18 editions published between 2003 and 2007 in English and Chinese and held by 968 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Mike Moore's reflection on his time as Director-General of the World Trade Organization is an important addition to the great globalisation debate. Moore explains how a boy who left school at fourteen to work in a slaughterhouse came to head an organisation charged with bringing rules and order to the world's trading system. Arriving at the WTO shortly before the ill-fated Seattle meeting, Moore sought to reform the Organization, addressing the concerns of poorer countries and engaging in open debate with the often hostile nongovernmental organisations (NGOs). He successfully negotiated ten new members into the WTO, including the world's most populous nation, China, and he gives an insider's view of how these negotiations were navigated. He is proud that in November 2001, at the meeting in Doha, these nations promised their commitment to a new round of trade talks with a focus on development. Moore rebuts the attacks against the WTO, and argues that the WTO's promise of rules-based free trade offers the best hope for lifting millions of the world's poorest citizens out of poverty. A World Without Walls examines our interdependent world which is now just beginning to integrate, and offers refreshing perspectives on an emerging global civil society and the challenges of global and corporate governance."--Jacket
Doha and beyond : the future of the multilateral trading system by Mike Moore( Book )

11 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 385 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book brings together members of the former WTO Director General's advisory group which was formed to provide him with expert advice before and after the Doha Ministerial Conference. Nine experts explore issues which are pertinent to the ongoing progress in negotiations, and their chapters are brought together with an introduction and conclusion. Key challenges which are explored include the divide between developed and developing countries, and the demand for increased transparency. Other experts write on sustainable development, corruption and labour, and the call for greater flexibility in the unanimity rule of the dispute settement mechanism. Finally, consideration is given to the impact of both China's accession and the enlargment of the EU. All in all, this volume offers an excellent summary of key issues facing the WTO as it moves forward. It should prove essential reading for trade negotiators and scholars concerned with the post-Cancoun agenda
Saving globalization : why globalization and democracy offer the best hope for progress, peace and development by Mike Moore( Book )

9 editions published between 2009 and 2013 in English and held by 201 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Globalization is not new, nor is it a policy, it's a process that has existed as long as man looked over the horizon, traveled and traded. It can't be stopped but it can be slowed. It came to a grinding halt in August 1914 and the Marxist detour cost millions of lives and lost three generations their opportunity and hope in many countries. More wealth has been created in the past 60 years than in all of history. After the most successful decade of sustained economic growth in history, this progress is threatened." "Extreme inequality, corruption and environmental degradation threaten the stability and legitimacy of many developing countries' regimes. Anti-globalization and anti-capitalist campaigners' confidence has been emboldened due to the recent economic crisis. Protectionist rhetoric is growing as are the arguments to control and regulate markets. Leaders are meeting to discuss how to face these problems and create a new international architecture. How did we get to this position? What should we do? What is it that determines why some contemporary states are successful while others have failed?" "Saving Globalization attempts to answer these questions by tracing the development of what Moore considers to be "the big ideas of history": democracy, independent courts, the separation of church and state, property rights, independent courts, a professional civil service, and civil society."--Jacket
