Einerseits ein Hinweis auf den Gehalt der Story, andererseits eine Anspielung auf die private Tragödie ihres Hauptdarstellers River Phoenix: Fast genau vor einem Jahr, am 31.10.1993, krepierte der Shooting-Star an einem Cocktail harter Drogen. Seltsam, aber angesichts der schweren Jugen von River Phoenix scheint sein gräßliches Ende so konsequent, wie es auch eine direkte Fortsetzung von "My Private Idaho" sein könnte. Auf den nächtlichen Straßen von Portland verdingen sich Mike und Scott als Strichjungen. Ihre Kunden sind frustrierte Ehefrauen und schwule Männer. Mike hat kaum eine andere Wahl: Er stammt aus einer zerrütteten Familie, ist auf der ständigen Suche nach seiner Mutter und findet einen Ersatzvater im Drogendealer (!) und Zuhälter Bob. Ab und an erleidet Mike einen Anfall von Narkolepsie, einer Schlafkrankheit, die alle Muskeln jäh erschlaffen läßt. für Scott dagegen ist das Vagabundieren nur eine effektvolle Möglichkeit, dem Schatten seines Vater zu entfliehen, des mächtigen Bürgermeisters. Als Mike und Scott nach Italien fliehen und sich Scott in Camella verliebt, zerbricht die Freundschaft ... River Phoenix, der nie eine Schauspielschule besuchte, erregte bereits als Kinderstar Aufmerksamkeit. Nach "Explorers" und "Stand by me" spielte er in "Mosquito Coast" neben Harrison Ford und erhielt für "Die Flucht ins Ungewisse" eine Oscar-Nominierung.
