ALS, 1781 November 14, East of Santee, [South Carolina], to General Nathanael Greene
by Francis Marion
(
)
in English and held by 1 library worldwide Marion, known as "The Swamp Fox," was Brigadier general in South Carolina during this period. In November of 1781 he assisted General Greene in driving what remained of the British army out of South Carolina. Marion had heard on November 9 of Cornwallis's surrender at Yorktown; and on the 10th he had given a ball to honor his officers and celebrate a Congressional resolution praising his conduct at the battle of Eutaw Springs. When he wrote this letter four days later, Marion had taken the field again. Stationed in St. Thomas Parish, his objective was to "annoy" the British at Wappetaw Meeting House near Huger's Bridge; and later in the month he sent Colonel Maham down to attack. Maham found that the garrison had fled to Charleston, and Marion "followed him down with his brigade and lingered near Huger's Bridge, driving off the cattle and taking up supplies felt to be useful to the enemy." more
