Advances in object-oriented database systems : 2nd International Workshop on Object-oriented Database Systems, Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg, FRG, September 27-30, 1988, proceedings by Klaus R Dittrich( Book )

29 editions published between 1988 and 2007 in 4 languages and held by 369 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Annotation This volume collects papers presented at the 2nd International Workshop on Object-Oriented Database Systems (ooDBS-II) held at the Ebernburg near Bad Münster am Stein, FRG, in September 1988. It thus gives a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in this flourishing area of current database research. Object-oriented database systems have been approached with mainly two major intentions in mind, namely to better support new application areas like CAD/CAM, office automation, knowledge engineering, and to overcome the 'impedance mismatch' between data models and programming languages. The notion of object-orientation in database systems is thus a broader one than e.g. in the area of programming languages. Structural object-orientation provides for data model mechanisms that allow the direct representation and manipulation of highly-structured entities; behavioral object-orientation cares for facilities to associate arbitrary user-defined type-specific operations with data entities; finally, full object-orientation tries to combine the advantages of both categories. Though data model concepts are the decisive feature of object-oriented database systems, numerous other system aspects have to be reconsidered or allow better solutions, respectively, in this light. They include e.g. transactions, implementation techniques, optimization, formalization, the inclusion of rules, and the integration with other systems. A number of research prototypes and even some commercial systems are meanwhile available. Both, approaches to extend databases with object-oriented capabilities and approaches to extend object-oriented programming languages with database features have been and are being investigated

Component database systems by Klaus R Dittrich( Book )

21 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 239 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Component Database Systems is a collection of invited chapters by the researchers making the most influential contributions in the database industry's trend toward componentization This book represents the sometimes-divergent, sometimes-convergent approaches taken by leading database vendors as they seek to establish commercially viable componentization strategies. Together, these contributions form the first book devoted entirely to the technical and architectural design of component-based database systems. In addition to detailing the current state of their research, the authors also take up many of the issues affecting the likely future directions of component databases. If you have a stake in the evolution of any of today's leading database systems, this book will make fascinating reading. It will also help prepare you for the technology that is likely to become widely available over the next several years. * Is comprised of contributions from the field's most highly respected researchers, including key figures at IBM, Oracle, Informix, Microsoft, and POET. * Represents the entire spectrum of approaches taken by leading software companies working on DBMS componentization strategies. * Covers component-focused architectures, methods for hooking components into an overall system, and support for component development. * Examines the component technologies that are most valuable to Web-based and multimedia databases. * Presents a thorough classification and overview of component database systems
On object-oriented database systems by Klaus R Dittrich( Book )

15 editions published between 1991 and 1992 in English and held by 225 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Object-oriented database systems have been approached with mainly two major intentions in mind, namely to better support new application areas including CAD/CAM, office automation, knowledge engineering, and to overcome the `impendance mismatch' between data models and programming languages. This volume gives a comprehensive overwiew of developments in this flourishing area of current database research. Data model and language aspects, interface and database design issues, architectural and implementation questions are covered. Although based on a series of workshops, the contents of this book has been carefully edited to reflect the current state of international research in object oriented database design and implementation
Engineering databases : connecting islands of automation through databases by José Luis Encarnação( Book )

6 editions published in 1990 in English and German and held by 161 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book discusses the maturity of today's database technology in the light of the needs of engineering applications and industrial automation. Those at the forefront of database research come up with new techniques to satisfy new needs, but today's engineering community must live with database systems that reflect the older state of the art. The purpose of the book is to demonstrate that even though solutions based on today's technology are less than perfect, they do provide solutions to current pressing problems. The book mainly covers current database technology and its applications, but also mentions some promising techniques under research in order to prepare the reader for the future. The book contains four chapters that cover the significance of engineering databases, the current state of database technology, the utilization of engineering databases, and two extensive case studies. For cursory reading, the chapters may be considered to be self-contained. Intended readers are middle management and engineers from industry who deal with automation both as users and vendors, consultants to such industry, vendors of database systems, and lecturers and students. The book requires no special background in informatics
