This book is an integrated account of modern developments in energy methods for the study of free boundary problems in partial differential equations. The theory presented has particular relevance to a number of physical applications, including heat conduction, surface and underground water flow, filtration through porous media, flows of nonNewtonian fluids, boundary layers, chemical reactions, and semiconductors. The work is divided into two parts. The first part is an exposition of the methods of several general classes of nonlinear equations and systems. Part two presents applications to the theory. Parts I, II and III are devoted to general models and Part IV to models related to some local problems. It is well known that the conservation laws and the constitutive equations of Continuum Mechanics lead to complicated coupled systems of partial differential equations to which, as a rule, one fails to apply the techniques, such as the maximum principle, usually employed in the studies of scalar uncoupled equations. The study of the qualitative behaviour of solutions of the systems requires different techniques, such as the socalled Energy Methods where the properties of some integral of a nonnegative function of one or several unknowns allow one to arrive at important conclusions on the involved unknowns. This volume presents the state of the art in such a technique. Special attention is paid to the class of Free Boundary Problems. Audience: Researchers, graduate and postgraduate students, and professionals active in physics, engineering and applied mathematics

Abstract: "The Boussinesq system arises in Fluid Mechanics when motion is governed by density gradients caused by temperature or concentration differences. In the former case, and when thermodynamical coefficients are regarded as temperature dependent, the system consists of the NavierStokes equations and the non linear heat equation coupled through the viscosity, bouyancy and convective terms. According to the balance between specific heat and thermal conductivity the diffusion term in the heat equation may lead to a singular or degenerate parabolic equation. In this paper we prove the existence of solutions of the general problem as well as the uniqueness of solutions when the spatial dimension is two."

Abstract: "A driftdiffusion model for semiconductors with nonlinear diffusion is considered. The model consists of two quasilinear degenerated parabolic equations for the carrier densities and the Poisson equation for the electric potential. We also assume Lipschitz continuous non linearities in the drift and generationrecombination terms. Existence of weak solutions is proven by using a regularization technique. Uniqueness of solutions is proven when either the diffusion term [phi] is strictly increasing and solutions have spatial derivatives in L¹(Q[subscript T]) or when [phi] is non decreasing and a suitable entropy condition is fulfilled by the electric potential."
