Nonlinear partial differential equations and free boundaries by J. I Díaz( Book )
9 editions published between 1985 and 1987 in English and held by 214 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this Research Note the author brings together the body of known work and presents many recent results relating to nonlinear partial differential equations that give rise to a free boundary--usually the boundary of the set where the solution vanishes identically. The formation of such a boundary depends on an adequate balance between two of the terms of the equation that represent the particular characteristics of the phenomenon under consideration: diffusion, absorption, convection, evolution etc. These balances do not occur in the case of a linear equation or an arbitrary nonlinear equation. Their characterization is studied for several classes of nonlinear equations relating to applications such as chemical reactions, non-Newtonian fluids, flow through porous media and biological populations. In this first volume, the free boundary for nonlinear elliptic equations is discussed. A second volume dealing with parabolic and hyperbolic equations is in preparation
Energy methods for free boundary problems : applications to nonlinear PDEs and fluid mechanics by S. N Antont︠s︡ev( Book )
9 editions published between 2001 and 2002 in English and held by 206 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book is an integrated account of modern developments in energy methods for the study of free boundary problems in partial differential equations. The theory presented has particular relevance to a number of physical applications, including heat conduction, surface and underground water flow, filtration through porous media, flows of non-Newtonian fluids, boundary layers, chemical reactions, and semiconductors. The work is divided into two parts. The first part is an exposition of the methods of several general classes of nonlinear equations and systems. Part two presents applications to the theory. 'Energy Methods for Free Boundary Problems' will appeal to applied mathematicians and graduate students whose research is in partial differential equations, nonlinear analysis, and continuum mechanics. Applications to a number of different problems arising in continuum mechanics (fluid dynamics) are presented making this book of equal interest to physicists and engineers as well

Ocean circulation and pollution control : a mathematical and numerical investigation : a Diderot Mathematical Forum by J. I Díaz( Book )
6 editions published between 2004 and 2013 in English and German and held by 131 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In the framework of the Diderot Mathematical Forum (DMF) of the European Mathematical Society (EMS), December 19-20, 1997, a Videoconference was held linking three teams of specialists in Amsterdam, Madrid and Venice respectively. The general subject of this videoconference, the second one of the DMF series, was Mathematics and Environment and more specifically, Problems related to Water. This volume contains the texts of the Madrid site contributions with important, new and unpublished, examples on the modeling, mathematical and numerical analysis and treatment of the associated control problems of relevant questions arising in Oceanography and Environment
Energy methods in continuum mechanics : proceedings of the Workshop on Energy Methods for Free Boundary Problems in Continuum Mechanics, held in Oviedo, Spain, March 21-23, 1994 by S. N Antont︠s︡ev( Book )
4 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 89 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Energy Methods for Free Boundary Problems in Continuum Mechanics, held in Oviedo, Spain, 21-23 March 1994. It is well known that the conservation laws and the constitutive equations of Continuum Mechanics lead to complicated coupled systems of partial differential equations to which, as a rule, one fails to apply the techniques, such as the maximum principle, usually employed in the studies of scalar uncoupled equations. The study of the qualitative behaviour of solutions of the systems requires different techniques, such as the so-called Energy Methods where the properties of some integral of a non-negative function of one or several unknowns allow one to arrive at important conclusions on the involved unknowns. This volume presents the state of the art in such a technique. Special attention is paid to the class of Free Boundary Problems. Audience: Researchers, graduate and postgraduate students, and professionals active in physics, engineering and applied mathematics

Existence and uniqueness of solutions to the Boussinesq system with nonlinear thermal diffusion by J. I Díaz( Book )
2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Abstract: "The Boussinesq system arises in Fluid Mechanics when motion is governed by density gradients caused by temperature or concentration differences. In the former case, and when thermodynamical coefficients are regarded as temperature dependent, the system consists of the Navier-Stokes equations and the non linear heat equation coupled through the viscosity, bouyancy and convective terms. According to the balance between specific heat and thermal conductivity the diffusion term in the heat equation may lead to a singular or degenerate parabolic equation. In this paper we prove the existence of solutions of the general problem as well as the uniqueness of solutions when the spatial dimension is two."

On a quasilinear degenerated system arising in semiconductors theory by J. I Díaz( Book )
2 editions published in 1997 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Abstract: "A drift-diffusion model for semiconductors with nonlinear diffusion is considered. The model consists of two quasilinear degenerated parabolic equations for the carrier densities and the Poisson equation for the electric potential. We also assume Lipschitz continuous non linearities in the drift and generation-recombination terms. Existence of weak solutions is proven by using a regularization technique. Uniqueness of solutions is proven when either the diffusion term [phi] is strictly increasing and solutions have spatial derivatives in L¹(Q[subscript T]) or when [phi] is non decreasing and a suitable entropy condition is fulfilled by the electric potential."
