Nul ne saurait nier le rôle prépondérant de la percussion dans la musique moderne ni le regain d'intérêt que connaissent, depuis plus de dix ans en Europe, les instruments à peau d'origine africaine, afro-cubaine, voire asiatique. Parmi ceux-ci, la derbouka, dotée d'une technique de jeu raffinée et d'un répertoire rythmique considérable, n'avait jamais fait l'objet d'un enseignement rationnel et approfondi. C'est chose faite avec ce livre qui devrait intéresser grand nombre de percussionnistes occidentaux, lesquels, dans le domaine des instruments extra-européens, doivent se contenter bien souvent d'une pédagogie encore sommaire et hésitante. Car c'est bien l'objet et le pari de ce livre : transmettre par l'écrit un art et une pratique musicale encore véhiculés aujourd'hui par la tradition orale. Au plan de la technique, l'auteur s'est efforcé de dresser un tableau complet des frappes courantes, mais aussi de systématiser l'enseignement de variations, astuces de doigté, fantaisies utilisées par les percussionnistes du monde arabe et qui donnent à l'instrument tout son attrait. C'est au cours de ses nombreux voyages dans le monde arabe que l'auteur, traducteur d'arabe et percussionniste lui-même, a observé, écouté et collecté ces techniques et ces rythmes, avant de les fondre en une unité dont résulte toute la cohérence de cet ouvrage. -- Back cover
