Bibliographic lists of about four hundred manuscripts which have been separated from the main collection of the "Winthrop papers" and deposited elsewhere, as reported by Robert Charles Winthrop Jr. These manuscripts consist largely of official documewnts, of varying degrees of importance, which were accumulated by John Winthrop Jr. (1606-1676), first colonial governor of Connecticut, and by his son, John Winthrop III (1638-1707), known colloquially as Fitz-John Winthrop, a later colonial governor of Connecticut. Brief descrip- tions of these manuscripts are listed chronologically under the name of the library to which they were donated, as follows: (1) State Library of Connecticut, at Hartford; (2) Library of the Connecticut Historical Society, at Hartford; (3) Library of the Essex Institute, at Salem; (3) Library of the Long Island Historical Society, at Brooklyn. Apparently the main collection of "Winthrop papers" went to the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston
