Pictorial nominalism on Marcel Duchamp's passage from painting to the readymade by Thierry de Duve( Book )

33 editions published between 1984 and 2006 in 3 languages and held by 700 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Beginning in 1912 when Marcel Duchamp wrote in a note to himself, "No more painting, get a job," Thierry de Duve reviews the implications of the readymade for art. Arguing that the readymade belongs to that moment in the history of painting when both figuration and the practice of painting become "impossible," de Duve presents a psychoanalytically informed account of the birth of abstraction

Kant after Duchamp by Thierry de Duve( Book )

30 editions published between 1996 and 1999 in English and Spanish and held by 574 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Kant after Duchamp brings together eight essays around a central thesis with many implications for the history of avant-gardes. Marcel Duchamp, Thierry de Duve observes, made the logic of modernist art practice the subject matter of his work, a shift in aesthetic judgment that replaced the classical "this is beautiful" with "this is art." De Duve employs this shift (replacing the word "beauty" by the word "art") in a rereading of Kant's Critique of Judgment that reveals the hidden links between the radical experiments of Duchamp and the Dadaists and mainstream pictorial modernism. The essays, all updated for this book, are divided into four parts. Part I revolves around Duchamp's famous/infamous Fountain. Part II explores Duchamp's passage from painting to the readymades, from art in particular to art in general. Part III looks at the aesthetic and ethical consequences of the replacement of "beauty" with "art" in Kant's Critique of Judgment. Finally, part IV attempts to reconstruct an "archaeology" of modernism that paves the way for a renewed understanding of our postmodern condition
Jeff Wall by Kerry Brougher( Book )

21 editions published between 1995 and 2002 in 3 languages and held by 512 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Jeff Wall is foremost among the artists who since the late 1960s have brought photography to the forefront of contemporary art. This revised and expanded edition of the definitive monograph on the Canadian artist, first published in 1996, includes a new fully illustrated essay on Wall's recent work by the French historian of art and photography Jean-Fran+ois Chevrier, in addition to the artist's recent writings. Describing himself as 'a painter of modern life', Wall produces huge transparencies mounted onto light boxes which diffuse a brilliant glow through his photographs of contemporary urban scenes and 'constructed' social situations. These images employ the latest technology to create tableaux which are evocative of subjects ranging from Hollywood cinema to nineteenth-century history painting. When installed they evoke both the seduction of the cinema screen and the physical presence of minimalist sculptures. Wall engages at a sophisticated level with theories of representation both as an artist and as a theoretical writer on contemporary art and culture. Major surveys of his work have been presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (1995); the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume, Paris (1995); the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (1996), and the Mus+e d'Art Contemporain, Montreal (1999)

Sewn in the sweatshops of Marx : Beuys, Warhol, Klein, Duchamp by Thierry de Duve( Book )

11 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 348 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, Yves Klein, and Marcel Duchamp form an unlikely quartet, but they each played a singular role in shaping a new avant-garde for the 1960s and beyond. Each of them staged brash, even shocking, events and produced works that challenged the way the mainstream art world operated and thought about itself. Thierry de Duve binds these artists through another connection, the mapping of the aesthetic field onto political economy. Karl Marx provides the red thread tying together these four essays in which de Duve treats each artist

The art biennial as a global phenomenon : strategies in neo-political times( Book )

5 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 105 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Not only is there a boom in international art biennials, but they are also increasingly deployed for developing and marketing cities and regions. In order to compensate for this, political issues are more and more often put on the agenda. Can biennials really represent an alternative political voice? This extra anniversary issue of Open contains a number of lectures delivered at the debate on this issue in October 2008 in connection with the first Brussels Biennial. Together with supplementary texts, a 'reader' has been created in which the biennial as a global phenomenon is analysed and approached not only in terms of an art theoretical discourse or curatorial practice, but also on the basis of more sociological and politico-philosophical points of view"--P. Essais datés by Thierry de Duve( Book )

19 editions published between 1987 and 2015 in French and Undetermined and held by 89 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
