This is a first-hand account of one of the most creative and exciting periods of discovery in the history of physics. From 1965 until 1990 theoreticians and experimentalists worked together to probe deeper and deeper into the basic structure of reality, moving closer and closer to an understanding of the ultimate building blocks from which everything in the universe is made. Gerard 't Hooft worked in the field throughout this period of almost unprecedented discovery, and was closely involved in many of the advances in the development of the subject. In this book he gives a personal account of the process by which physicists came to understand the structure of matter through the development of what is now known as the Standard Theory. In the latter part of the book, he speculates on structures even smaller than those already known to exist, on black holes, grand unification and on possible directions in which the subject may evolve in the future.

Few people studying Gauge Field Theory need to be convinced of the importance of the work of 't Hooft. This volume contains a selection of articles and review topics covering his well-known studies on the renormalization of non-Abelian gauge theorems, topological phenomena in gauge field theory and thoughts on the role of black holes in quantum gravity. The chapters are tied together by thoughtful commentaries which provide a background and the illumination of hindsight - together they form a clear and coherent picture of the physical and theoretical importance of gauge theories and the gauge p.

If you think the future is a mystery, think again. With a solid foothold in realism, an extraordinary insight into scientific and technological developments, and a dry sense of humour, Nobel laureate Professor Gerard 't Hooft confidently dissects fact from fiction and shows us what our future might really hold.
