The effects of nuclear weapons by United States( Book )

4 editions published between 1957 and 1960 in English and Russian and held by 364 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"When 'The Effects of Atomic Weapons' was published in 1950, the explosive energy yields of the fission bombs available at that time were equivalent to some thousands of tons (i.e., kilotons) of TNT. With the development of thermonuclear (fusion) weapons, having energy yields in the range of millions of tons (i.e., megatons) of TNT, a new presentation, entitled 'The Effects of Nuclear Weapons, ' was issued in 1957. A completely revised edition was published in 1962 and this was reprinted with a few changes early in 1964. Since the last version of 'The Effects of Nuclear Weapons' was prepared, much new information has become available concerning nuclear weapons effects. This has come in part from the series of atmospheric tests, including several at very high altitudes, conducted in the Pacific Ocean area in 1962. In addition, laboratory studies, theoretical calculations, and computer simulations have provided a better understanding of the various effects. Within the limits imposed by security requirements, the new information has been incorporated in the present edition. In particular, attention may be called to a new chapter on the electromagnetic pulse. The material is arranged in a manner that should permit the general reader to obtain a good understanding of the various topics without having to cope with the more technical details. Most chapters are thus in two parts: the first part is written at a fairly low technical level whereas the second treats some of the more technical and mathematical aspects. The presentation allows the reader to omit any or all of the latter sections without loss of continuity."--Preface

America's atomic bomb tests( Visual )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 90 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

After World War II, American scientists and military officials conducted numerous atomic tests in the American Southwest; now this incredible documentary footage (intended for internal use and not declassified until 1997) comes to light in three essential DVDs
Nuclear war films. the beginning & the end, atomic weapons orientation films( Visual )

1 edition published in 2005 in English and held by 46 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Recently declassified U.S. government films which explain the physics and mechanics of the destructive power of America's nuclear arsenal, with passing mention of delivery systems. Although the different films are various revisions, they are apparently intended to be viewed in the sequence presented, and apparently intended for military personnel or civilians in the defense sector

"[These] Civil Defense films were mostly created during the height of the Cold War in the 1950's, when there was a Communist behind every bush, and nuclear war was going to happen at any instant."--Container
The medical aspects of nuclear radiation( Visual )

2 editions published between 2005 and 2007 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This absurd 1950 U.S. Air Force-sponsored film purports to give its audience the facts about the dangers of nuclear fallout, radiation sickness and the effects of exposure of nuclear radiation on people
A guide for the design of shock isolation systems for underground protective structures by Air Force Special Weapons Center (U.S.)( Book )

1 edition published in 1962 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report reviews the major considerations relating to the design of Shock Isolation Systems for use in underground protective structures, emphasizing in particular those areas where special guidance is needed by the facility engineer. The motion of the ground due to nuclear blast, the interaction of the ground motion with buried structures, and the tolerances of typical facility equipment to shock are described and employed to establish the input and output requirements for isolation systems. Analytical methods for determining the dynamic responses of both linear and nonlinear isolation systems are summarized and, for several of the more commonly used configurations, the equations are reduced to simple form. The report suggests the use of the shock response spectrum in a unified approach to the specification of attenuation requirements, equipment shock tolerances and shock test machine selection
Military participation on Tumbler/Snapper( Visual )

1 edition published in 1996 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Shows the preparation for 8 separate atomic bomb tests that were done in sequence, the tests themselves, and the consequences (e.g. radioactive fallout) of each. The tests were performed in Nevada; the first 4 were designated Tumbler, while the last 4 were designated Snapper

Underground explosion effects : report to the test director by D. C Sachs( Book )

1 edition published in 1958 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Project 1.7 of Operation TEAPOT was concerned with the measurement of surface and subsurface effects of an underground explosion of a 1.2-kt nuclear burst (Shot 7). The measurements included free-field earth and airblast effects, as well as loading on underground structural devices. This report deals with the presentation and analysis of the free-field data only; the structural data have been transmitted to the appropriate agencies for their analysis. From the 76 channels installed on TEAPOT Shot 7, 75 usable records were obtained. The free-field quantities measured include air-blast pressure, earth acceleration, earth stress and strain, and permanent earth displacement. The results are discussed by phenomenon and, in each case, the TEAPOT data are compared with pretest predictions. Also, where data are available, comparisons are made with previous underground nuclear test results. Some aspects of seismology and soil mechanics as applied to underground explosion phenomena are presented and, finally, the most pertinent high explosives results from subsequent tests conducted at the TEAPOT location are summarized.
