Einstein manifolds by A. L Besse( Book )

52 editions published between 1986 and 2008 in 4 languages and held by 577 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the reviews: "[...] an efficient reference book for many fundamental techniques of Riemannian geometry. [...] despite its length, the reader will have no difficulty in getting the feel of its contents and discovering excellent examples of all interaction of geometry with partial differential equations, topology, and Lie groups. Above all, the book provides a clear insight into the scope and diversity of problems posed by its title." S.M. Salamon in MathSciNet 1988 "It seemed likely to anyone who read the previous book by the same author, namely "Manifolds all of whose geodesic are closed", that the present book would be one of the most important ever published on Riemannian geometry. This prophecy is indeed fulfilled." T.J. Wilmore in Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society 1987

Dual Maxwellian space plasma modeling by the logarithmic method by A. L Besse( Book )

4 editions published in 1983 in English and held by 62 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A common and useful practice in the study of spacecraft charging phenomena is the use of dual Maxwellian models of the particle distributions. These models frequently employ a least error fit to the logarithm of the measured distribution function over an energy range that may exceed three decades. By example, we demonstrate that the resulting models are not satisfactory for the calculation of spacecraft charging. The models do not have a sufficient number of adjustable parameters to fit the measured spectra over such a wide energy range. More satisfactory models are obtained by weighting the spectral data according to their relevance to the spacecraft charging phenomena under investigation. In addition, reasonable limits must be placed on the temperatures of the models to prevent the artifacts that have been experienced in a minority of cases. (Author)
The Angular impact distribution of charged particles attracted to a charged cylindrical spacecraft by A. L Besse( Book )

2 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The angular distribution of incident particles is obtained for attracted and repelled particles incident on a charged cylindrical spacecraft. The angular distributions are important when backscattering and secondary emission are significant processes. Results are given for planes and spheres as well. (Author)
The hydrogen dissociation laser by Arthur Cohn( Book )

2 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 10 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The H2 dissociation laser buffered with argon using electron beam excitation is considered. The argon buffer greatly increases the light output from the upper laser level, compared with pure hydrogen. It does this by absorbing much more of the electron beam energy, and by transferring it more efficiently to the upper laser level. Upper laser level densities of 3 x 10 to the 13th power per cc are experimentally obtained. This should be sufficient for practical gain if auxiliary loss processes such as photoionization absorption do not cancel the gain. This problem has not yet been determined. If these adsorption processes are within estimated bounds, an energy density of approximately 5 joules per liter, over a pulse time of about 10 nsec, at an efficiency of about 10 percent for tunable radiation in the 0.4- to 0.6- micrometer wavelength range is predicted. Charging of the DMSP F-2 Spacecraft in the Aurora on 10 January 1983( Book )

1 edition published in 1984 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Two independent instruments on the spacecraft showed charging to a moderate (65 volts) negative potential. The electron spectrometer showed a flux of 2 x ten to the 9th power electrons cm/sec/ster peaked at 9.5 keV. This was marginally sufficient to overcome the flux of cold ambient ions. Charging calculations are presented showing where simplifications are justified and where serious uncertainties exist. More serious charging is predicted for the Shuttle in polar orbit

Research directed toward plasma stability studies in magnetic fields( Book )

1 edition published in 1965 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Section I describes preliminary x-ray studies of high density plasmas produced by exploding wires. Symptoms of turbulence, which are always observable in lightpicture studies, were not detected in the x-ray photographs. Further investigations are suggested wherein dual x-ray equipment might be used together with more accurate scanning techniques. Section II describes an interferometer with laser source as a means of determining electron densities. Further described therein is an electron beam instrument for determining heavy particle densities. Section III discusses the physical characteristics and implications of the moving radiation sources observed in the shock tube experiments. In Section IV, the electrical conductivity of a partially ionized gas in a uniform magnetic field is determined. This extension of the Sen-Wyller magneto-ionic theory was motivated by the fact that ionospheric, interstellar, and laboratory plasmas do contain neutral gas molecules. In Section V, a nonlinear analysis of plasma oscillations reveals the existence of: (1) composite modes resulting from the repeated mutual interaction of the incident field and plasma components; (2) an infinity squared of Larmor resonances. Section VI is a conjectural study of small amplitude wave motions in a two-stream hydromagnetic gas with Hall perturbations. (Author)
Potential Barriers and Multiple Roots in Spacecraft Charging( Book )

1 edition published in 1983 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This paper considers two phenomena that may be demonstrated with considerable rigor by computer modeling using a code such as NASCAP. The computer modeling, however, fails to give insight into the physics involved. This paper attempts to furnish such insight by use of simple barrier models and by sketching the history of multiple roots with emphasis on the necessary conditions
Calibration of the SSJ/3 Sensor on the DMSP Satellites( Book )

1 edition published in 1977 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The SSJ/3 sensor is designed to measure electrons from 50 eV to 20 keV. This is accomplished by using two head assemblies with common signal processing and voltage sources. The low-energy head assembly selects 50.0 to 1,000 eV electrons over eight channels with a normalization factor H = 0.000043 sq cm- ster. The high-energy assembly similarly selects 1.00 to 20.0 keV electrons over eight channels with an H-factor equal to 0.000013 sq cm-ster. Energy resolution is approximately 10% for an isotropic incident flux. An electron beam was used to determine angular and energy response. These measurements were compared with results from a Monte-Carlo computer code and approximate analytic methods to determine the final normalizations. (Author)
Shuttle Orbiter Charging in Polar Earth Orbit( Book )

1 edition published in 1983 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Spacecraft in polar orbit are subject to charging by the intense electron stream that comprises the aurora. Charging is computed according to the Laframboise theory of plasma probes in which the variation of sheath thickness with potential is taken into account. In this environment spacecraft charge to potentials that depend on their size. It is shown that large spacecraft charge to higher potentials than small spacecraft. The shuttle orbiter being a large spacecraft, may charge to more than 6 kV passing through an intense beam of auroral electrons. Because of the deficiency of ambient ions in the near wake region, the rear of the vehicle will have the lowest threshold auroral current for charging and will charge to the highest potential.
