A common and useful practice in the study of spacecraft charging phenomena is the use of dual Maxwellian models of the particle distributions. These models frequently employ a least error fit to the logarithm of the measured distribution function over an energy range that may exceed three decades. By example, we demonstrate that the resulting models are not satisfactory for the calculation of spacecraft charging. The models do not have a sufficient number of adjustable parameters to fit the measured spectra over such a wide energy range. More satisfactory models are obtained by weighting the spectral data according to their relevance to the spacecraft charging phenomena under investigation. In addition, reasonable limits must be placed on the temperatures of the models to prevent the artifacts that have been experienced in a minority of cases. (Author)

The H2 dissociation laser buffered with argon using electron beam excitation is considered. The argon buffer greatly increases the light output from the upper laser level, compared with pure hydrogen. It does this by absorbing much more of the electron beam energy, and by transferring it more efficiently to the upper laser level. Upper laser level densities of 3 x 10 to the 13th power per cc are experimentally obtained. This should be sufficient for practical gain if auxiliary loss processes such as photoionization absorption do not cancel the gain. This problem has not yet been determined. If these adsorption processes are within estimated bounds, an energy density of approximately 5 joules per liter, over a pulse time of about 10 nsec, at an efficiency of about 10 percent for tunable radiation in the 0.4- to 0.6- micrometer wavelength range is predicted. The 6 inch arc driven shock tube located in the Space Physics Laboratory, Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories, was used to study shocks in noble gases. To facilitate the work, improvements both in the basic shock tube and in the instrumentation were made. The boundary layers, stability, and other characteristics of hot ionized samples generated by the shocks were studied experimentally in detail. Certain stability calculations were made, the electron beam apparatus (for plasma diagnosis) improved but not perfected, and a study of light scattering techniques made. (Author)

Section I describes preliminary x-ray studies of high density plasmas produced by exploding wires. Symptoms of turbulence, which are always observable in lightpicture studies, were not detected in the x-ray photographs. Further investigations are suggested wherein dual x-ray equipment might be used together with more accurate scanning techniques. Section II describes an interferometer with laser source as a means of determining electron densities. Further described therein is an electron beam instrument for determining heavy particle densities. Section III discusses the physical characteristics and implications of the moving radiation sources observed in the shock tube experiments. In Section IV, the electrical conductivity of a partially ionized gas in a uniform magnetic field is determined. This extension of the Sen-Wyller magneto-ionic theory was motivated by the fact that ionospheric, interstellar, and laboratory plasmas do contain neutral gas molecules. In Section V, a nonlinear analysis of plasma oscillations reveals the existence of: (1) composite modes resulting from the repeated mutual interaction of the incident field and plasma components; (2) an infinity squared of Larmor resonances. Section VI is a conjectural study of small amplitude wave motions in a two-stream hydromagnetic gas with Hall perturbations. (Author)

The emission of short wavelength visible light from argon-hydrogen mixtures irradiated by a pulsed 1.7 MeV electron beam has been studied, as well as the absorption of 4416A radiation in the mixture. Absorption was found to increase faster than linearly with increased argon pressure. A new multipass gain or absorption measuring technique was devised which measures small amounts of gain with high sensitivity. At the highest excited state density obtained, 3 x 10 to the 13th power /cc, the absorption in argon-hydrogen mixtures is positive
